NEW YORK, NY.- The Museum of Modern Art has chosen Trisha Donnelly as the tenth artist to participate in Artists Choice, a series in which an artist whose work is in the Museums collection is invited to organize an exhibition from MoMAs vast holdings. Artists Choice: Trisha Donnelly, on view from November 2, 2012 through April 8, 2013, presents rarely seen 20th-century photographs, films, design objects, prints, drawings, paintings, and sculpture in three of The Alfred H. Barr Painting and Sculpture Galleries on the fourth and fifth floors of the Museum. The exhibition is organized by Trisha Donnelly with Laura Hoptman, Curator, and Cara Manes, Collection Specialist, Department of Painting and Sculpture.
The selected workswhich range from color nature photographs to drawings by visionary architectshave been organized into three discrete presentations that together challenge viewers to rethink the way they typically apprehend and classify works of art. Donnelly has chosen to dedicate one gallery to color photographs of natural subjects, primarily birds, by Eliot Porter (19011990). A group of microchip designs, featuring colorful and intricate works on paper from the Architecture and Design collection, are the focus of a second gallery. A third gallery features a chronologically eclectic mixture of drawings, photographs, and sculptures ranging from landscapes by Odilon Redon to drawings by contemporary Los Angeles artist Jim Shaw.
In addition to these three installations, several works that Donnelly selected for Artists Choice are presented in unconventional ways, such as an archival audio tour from a landmark MoMA exhibition available as three narrated stops on the Museums audio guide, as well as several objects interspersed within works currently on view in the collection galleries, and an untitled photo album (c. 1900) that Donnelly will present at a public program at the Museum on March 11, 2013.
A map illustrating the locations of Artists Choice works is available at the entrance to the galleries on the fourth and fifth floor.
"Donnelly is an artist whose work challenges us to rethink the way we typically look at a work of art, changing the way we experience it, says Ms. Hoptman. The objects that she has chosen for Artists Choice do something similar for the Museums chronological display of painting and sculpture. Filled with rarely displayed works of art that may surprise even our most avid viewers, her galleries will open new portals through which to view the collectionand the history of modern art as the Museum tells it."
Trisha Donnelly has been featured in exhibitions throughout the world, most recently at Documenta 13; the 54th Venice Biennale; the 2011 Sharjah Biennial; the Whitney Biennial; and the Carnegie International. Donnellys work has been a part of The Museum of Modern Arts collection since 2010.
