UK's best new building - Appleby Blue Almshouse wins RIBA Stirling Prize 2025 for architecture   Cristina Iglesias makes Hauser & Wirth debut with lunar meteorite bronzes and immersive water flows   Rijksmuseum opens major immersive exhibition on Dutch home life in the 17th century

LONDON.- The Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA) has named Appleby Blue Almshouse, a social housing complex for over-65’s, by Witherford Watson Mann Architects, as the winner of the RIBA Stirling Prize 2025. Presented since 1996, the prestigious annual award recognises the UK’s best new architecture. Replacing an abandoned care home, Appleby Blue radically reimagines the traditional almshouse, flipping the centuries-old typology by placing shared spaces at its heart to foster community and reduce isolation among residents. The development contains 59 bright, spacious flats arranged in a U-shape around a central garden courtyard. Inside, generous homes with discreet accessibility features offer an aspirational living environment, standing in stark contrast to the institutional atmosphere often associated with older people’s housing. Large kitchen windows draw in natural daylight and provide residents with uninterrupted views of the garden courtyard. A variety of plants, t ... More

LONDON.- This autumn marks the first exhibition by Spanish artist Cristina Iglesias at Hauser & Wirth since joining the gallery. Iglesias is known for her unique sculptural vocabulary developed over four decades, creating immersive and experiential environments that reference and unite architecture, literature, psychology, mechanics, natural elements and site-specific content. Combining the conventional matter of sculpture— familiar materials such as glass, steel, bronze—with non-traditional materials like water and sound, Iglesias has forged an extraordinary visual language that feels simultaneously unexpected and inevitable. Coinciding with her London debut at Hauser & Wirth, Cristina Iglesias is also having a solo exhibition at Fundació Catalunya La Pedrera in Barcelona, Spain, from 9 October 2025 – 25 January 2026 curated by James Lingwood. Daniel Buren transforms space and viewer with mirror, stripes, and high reliefs   Rebecca L. Rutherfurd named Chief Advancement Officer at the Morgan Library & Museum   Hayward Gallery launches monumental new sculptural commission from Teresa Solar Abboud

Consisting of high and low reliefs, this new group of artworks combines mirrors, colours (the different shades of which are chosen at random from an industrial palette), and Daniel Buren’s visual tool: alternating white and coloured 8.7-cm-wide vertical stripes.

PARIS.- Daniel Buren’s new exhibition at Mennour, “Du cercle aux carrés, hauts-reliefs situés et in situ”, is based on colourful geometric combinations that evoke an immediate sense of visual and intellectual stimulation for the viewer. Since his first personal exhibition at Mennour in 2007, which inaugurated the space at 47 rue Saint-André-des-Arts, Daniel Buren’s work has been the subject of solo shows in all four of the gallery’s spaces in Paris, and in art fairs throughout the world, including “C’était, c’est, ce sera, travaux situés”, “Quand les carrés font des cercles et des triangles : hauts-reliefs situés”, “Au fur et à mesure, travaux in situ et situés”, “Pyramidal, hauts-reliefs, travaux in situ et situés”, and “Plis contre plan, hauts-reliefs, travaux situés”. LONDON.- Today, the Hayward Gallery launches Mother Tongue: a monumental public art commission by Spanish artist Teresa Solar Abboud supported by Byredo and the Hayward Gallery’s Commissioning Committee. The bubblegum pink sculpture of two tongues intertwining as one dancing figure is located on the walkway in front of the Gallery’s entrance, giving the iconic brutalist site a surreal new look this Autumn. The commission marks the first time that the artist’s ambitious outdoor sculptures have been presented by a UK public art gallery. Solar Abboud’s larger-than-life installations capture moments of transformation. Vibrant and abstract, they blend mythology, anatomy, natural history and ecology to explore the relationship between human technology and the world around us. Returning to the Hayward Gallery, after previously participating in the group show When Forms Come Alive (2024), she works with bronze for the first time to create a deeply personal commission ... Clare Grill unveils 'Parlance': A new body of work steeped in layers and private codes
NEW YORK, NY.- Derek Eller Gallery presents a solo exhibition of new paintings by Clare Grill entitled Parlance. Thick vertical lines hum close to the surface of Flit like folds in a translucent curtain. Toward the top of the painting, a faded orange circle hovers off to the right of a smaller, more emphatic version of the same. A sun and its ghost? A siren and its shadow? Clare Grill’s paintings are, among much else, documents of accretion, profoundly attuned to their own past lives and to the gestures that conveyed the work from there to here. These flickers and remnants of earlier work never disappear into the background—they linger, waiting for Grill to arrange them in pictorial space and activate them in the painting’s hierarchy. For Grill, the background texture of a painting is as consequential as the marks and shapes that populate the foreground. “I care about the whole thing,” ... More

Cyprien Gaillard floods Haus der Kunst with Wassermusik and psychedelic stereoscopic film
MUNICH.- With Wassermusik, Haus der Kunst presents the new exhibition by Cyprien Gaillard (b. 1980, Paris), to coincide with the end of this year’s Oktoberfest. At the centre of the exhibition is the artist’s latest stereoscopic motion picture Retinal Rivalry (2024), partially filmed at Munich’s Oktoberfest, and co-produced by Haus der Kunst. By harnessing cutting-edge technology, Gaillard offers an expanded, sharpened vision of the world around us. This key work leads viewers on a journey through folded time and inaccessible urban surfaces: dumpsters and subterranean arteries, humid landscapes, and views through the eyes of the Bavaria statue at Oktoberfest. It thus enters into a close dialogue with the city of Munich and its world's largest folk festival, having it linger on as if in a strange memory, disrupting conventional perception with a sculptural and psychedelic ... Perrotin returns to Art Taipei with postwar masters and contemporary superstars
TAIPEI.- Perrotin returns to Art Taipei 2025, presenting a curated selection of works by leading 20th-century masters, established artists, alongside fresh perspectives from mid-career and new-generation artists within the gallery’s international program. Highlights of the twentieth century bring together Hans Hartung and Anna-Eva Bergman—key figures in European abstraction—and Lynn Chadwick, whose bronzes revitalized postwar figuration. As a significant figure of Art Informel and Lyrical Abstraction, Hartung turned toward greater spontaneity in the 1960s, painting directly on canvas rather than transposing intuitive studies from paper. Years of printmaking practice became more evident in his works of the 1960s and 1970s, where engraving and lithography served as mediums for mark-making experimentation. T1961-H23 (1961) showcases Hartung’s 1960s “scratching” ... More

Contemporary Art Centre in Vilnius presents Bells and Cannons: Contemporary Art in the Face of Militarisation
VILNIUS.- The international group exhibition Bells and Cannons presents different strategies used by contemporary artists in the face of militarisation. Its title refers to the close relationship between art and war. Historically, bells were often recast into cannons and other weaponry during wartime. In other words, from its very inception, the idea of a bell has included the possibility of military use, and both bells and cannons were frequently cast by the same craftspeople. Fittingly, the exhibition employs this metaphor of unexpected congruence to explore the complex relationship between war and culture. We could include art and culture as part of the contemporary conflict analysis vocabulary, alongside concepts such as soft power, psyop, and hybrid ... More
