MONTREAL, CANADA.- The Art of the Haitian Revolution: Around Girodet’s Portrait of Belley, a round table presented by the French Atlantic History Group of McGill University in collaboration with the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts, will take place on Thursday, November 16, 1.30 to 4.30 p.m. at the Auditorium Maxwell-Cummings, Pavillon Michal et Renata Hornstein.

The Portrait of C(itizen) Belley, Ex-representative of the Colonies by Anne-Louis Girodet (1797), is one of the most compelling portraits from the era of Atlantic revolutions in the late eighteenth century. Jean-Baptiste Belley (1747-1805) was one of the first representatives of the legislative assembly of Saint-Domingue (now Haiti), following the colony’s reorganization under the French Republic proclaimed in 1792. In this round table discussion, an international team of specialists will examine Belley’s portrait from various angles, exploring the visual culture of the French-speaking Atlantic world on the eve of the Haitian revolution.
