Liechtenstein Garden Palace Restored |

VIENNA, AUSTRIA.- The Liechtenstein Garden Palace has been restored. It was built under Prince Johann Adam Andreas I of Liechtenstein (16571712), who, commissioning a number of castles and palaces in Moravia such as Feldberg/Valtice and Eisgrub/Lednice, besides the two city palaces in Vienna was one of the greatest patrons of architecture in his time. Work on the project of a comprehensive refurbishment of the Liechtenstein Palace aimed at providing a venue for the return of the Princely Collections to Vienna began early in 2001. It was already clear from the outset that both the wealth of the building in terms of art and its technical infrastructure had to undergo fundamental restoration measures or changes. After careful planning by the Atelier Kräftner, Vienna, two essential decisions were made which determined the scope of the intervention: the entire building is now fully air-conditioned, and a basement was built below the Sala Terrena; this basement, which accommodates the necessary service facilities (which did not exist before) and the air-conditioning control system, is accessible via a new stairway.
