In the pantheon of antique train collecting, there are literally thousands of wonderful private collections that reflect their owners dedication to the hobby. But at the top of the train-collectors pyramid are those few names that everyone knows because of what they represent toys of such rarity and quality, they would be unattainable by most. That short list of revered names includes, without question, Jerry and Nina Greene, whose private collection will be offered in a series of auctions at Bertoias
starting with an April 9-10, 2016 sale.
The Greenes collection is phenomenal. Its one of the largest and most comprehensive toy train collections in the world, said Bertoia Auctions associate Rich Bertoia. Because it is so vast, we really cant estimate how many auctions will be required to sell it all. Its a major undertaking and one that were very proud to partake in.
At the series premiere, which will take place one week before the April York Train Meet, collectors can expect to see some of the best from Marklin, Bing, Lionel, Ives, American Flyer, Carlisle & Finch, and Voltamp, to name but a few of the prestigious brands represented. Also, there will be a wealth of stations and accessories, which the Greenes particularly loved to collect.
Bertoia added: Jerry and Nina didnt buy with just rarity in mind, they were also uncompromising when it came to condition. Even those pieces that arent the only known survivors are still in a class of their own because theyre simply the finest examples you could ever hope to own. To see so much quality and rarity in a single collection is very unusual, but to see consistently fine condition on top of that takes the collection to a whole new level.
Jeanne Bertoia, owner of Bertoia Auctions, remarked that part of the excitement about being chosen to auction the collection has been getting to know the owners themselves. With their superior knowledge aside, it has been a pleasure to be around collectors such as the Greenes, who demonstrate a refined taste and passion in collecting that you can set your standards by, she said. Every step of cataloging, displaying and presenting their beautiful collection at auction will be an enjoyable experience for us.
