Exhibition at Messum's offers an introductory survey to the work of Miles Richmond
Miles Richmond, Duino. Oil on canvas, 1948.

LONDON.- This important introductory survey to the work of former Borough Group painter, Miles Richmond includes nearly 50 oils, charcoals and watercolours – none of which have been publicly exhibited – illustrating a career that stretched from post-war London to Spain, Yorkshire and beyond.

Informed by the pioneering ethos of his former teacher and close friend David Bomberg, (1890-1957), Richmond based his entire career on a quest to paint landscape in terms of both its actualities and its innate energy and like Bomberg, he believed that drawing was a universal language that could potentially inform and transform society.

Key sections of this exhibit focus on Richmond's early studies of Ronda and southern Andalusia, his pivotal period in the early 1970s when he reinvented his work through Bauhaus colour theory, and the chromatic energy that marked his painting throughout the 1980s and 1990s.

Works are priced between £5,500 and £26,500. The exhibition is accompanied by a fully-illustrated catalogue with a semi-autobiographical discussion of the artist's life and work.

Messum's represent some of the strongest figurative artists working in Britain today, promoting a tradition of fine painting that we see as the backbone to British art through the centuries.

Messum's offer a broad inventory of fine British art from the past three centuries. With extensive experience in helping to build collections, our specialists are always on hand to offer professional expertise and advice in the buying and selling of fine art.

An ever-changing collection of earlier works, with a selection of Victorian & Traditional, British Impressionist & Modern British paintings are always on display, alongside exhibitions of work by contemporary artists.

Founded by David Messum in 1963, Messum's is an independent family firm specialising in British Art from the 19th Century to the present day, and is known for its vanguard studies and market innovation in the areas of British Impressionism and the Newlyn and St Ives Schools. The gallery presents an annual programme of over 20 exhibitions and events in addition to its annual participation at leading international art fairs.

Now in its second generation, Messum's continues to be a market leader in British art. As art dealers, we focus on buying and selling paintings, sculpture and works on paper. We also act as agents for vendors and can advise on all aspects of collecting, including research, conservation, framing and valuation. We engage actively with museums and public institutions in promoting British art and the enhancement of their collections. Additionally, we have loaned and arranged loans of artworks to Tate Britain, Tate St Ives, the National Maritime Museum, Birmingham Art Museum and Penlee House and Galleries.
