Wright's announces results from 20th century design sale

CHICAGO, IL.- Wright’s Design auction on October 17, 2013 featured nearly 400 lots of outstanding 20th century design. The auction sold 83% by lot and 90% by value, achieving a total of $3.2 million.

Particularly compelling were works by George Nakashima from the collection of Dr. John Sellers (Lots 100-123). Consigned by the original owner, the collection achieved in total of over $625,000. Outstanding among this collection is an Important Minguren I coffee table, crafted of Carpathian elm burl (Lot 107). This significant design achieved $123,700, over twice its low estimate.

The dark horse lot of the auction was a table lamp by Angelo Lelli (Lot 217). Estimated at $2,000-3,000, the lamp sold for $17,500, demonstrating the enormous popularity of Italian lighting design.

The top lot of the auction was This Mortal Coil, a steel bookcase by contemporary designer Ron Arad (Lot 285). Estimated at $50,000-70,000, This Mortal Coil sold for $134,500, a record price for this form. Other works which performed well in the Design auction include:

• Lot 101: George Nakashima, Kevin table. Estimate: $20,000-30,000. Result: $52,500.

• Lot 125: Harry Bertoia, untitled (Multi-Plane Construction). Estimate: $70,000-90,000. Result: $86,500

• Lot 195: Gino Sarfatti, floor lamp, model 1063. Estimate: $20,000-30,000. Result: $36,250.

• Lot 231: Franco Albini, rare Mitragliera floor lamp. Estimate: $10,000-15,000. Result: $69,700.

• Lot 297: Joaquim Tenreiro, pair of Light armchairs. Estimate: $7,000-9,000. Result: $17,500./

• Lot 344: Pierre Jeanneret, pair of lounge chairs from Chandigarh. Estimate: $10,000-15,000. Result: $40,000.

• Lot 346: Pierre Jeanneret, dining table from the Cafeteria of the PGI Hospital, Chandigarh. Estimate: $20,000-30,000. Result: $50,000.

• Lot 385: Ingrid Dessau, Diagonals carpet. Estimate: $15,000-20,000. Result: $25,000.

• Lot 403: Isamu Noguchi, Rudder coffee table, model IN-52. Result: $37,500.

Wright’s next auction will be Scandinavian Design, which is still the only auction in North America dedicated to the works of designers from Finland, Sweden, Norway and Denmark.
