German Artist Georg Baselitz Introduces a New Artistic Device into His Art: The Remix |

COPENHAGEN.- With the exhibition Baselitz Re-Mixed Kunstforeningen GL STRAND has opened its doors to one of the most significant painters today. Georg Baselitz (b. 1938) is one of the most prominent visual artists of his generation. The German artist works with sculpture, drawings and graphic art, but is best known for his characteristic paintings whose subjects are often shown upside down. This detaches the subject from the reality it represents.
Now Georg Baselitz has introduced a new artistic device into his art: the remix. This is a concept taken from the world of music. In the remix pictures he re-paints his own subjects from the 1960s and 1970s. In this way he looks at his paintings afresh and renews himself. At the same time Baselitz quotes the works of other artists, re-paints them and thus makes the subjects his own: they are his painterly comments on other artists work. The artists to whom Baselitz refers in his remix pictures include Edvard Munch, Andy Warhol and Sigmar Polke artists whose work Baselitz appreciates greatly.
For Georg Baselitz remixing is a method of subjecting painting to a revision; of putting it to the test. Unlike the older works, the remix versions are spontaneous in expression, just as the colours are brighter and clearer. The remix pictures are the central focus of the exhibition at GL STRAND. Baselitz Re-Mixed can thus be seen as an extension of the exhibition of work by the artist at the Louisiana Museum of Modern Art in 2005.
At GL STRAND Georg Baselitz latest works are presented on three floors. On the first floor one finds historical motifs such as the German Eagle and Hitler. On the second floor a number of water-colours are exhibition, and finally on the third floor we can see Baselitz dialogue with the history of art including a whole room devoted to his interpretations of subjects from other artists. Baselitz Re-Mixed has been produced in collaboration with Georg Baselitz, to who GL STRAND owes a great debt of gratitude.
