MADRID.- The Museo Nacional del Prado has reunited, for the first time, a remarkable group of eight paintings in which Valeriano Domínguez Bécquer captured the clothing, celebrations, labor and religious traditions of 19th-century Spain. Presented under the title Valeriano D. Bécquer (1834–1870): Paintings of Popular Customs, the exhibition brings together works commissioned for the former Museo de la Trinidad and later dispersed among different institutions. The series is now on view in Gallery 60 as part of the Prado’s “Open Storage” program, an initiative devoted to revealing new perspectives on the museum’s 19th-century collections. Bécquer completed the paintings between 1866 and 1867, traveling through Zaragoza, Soria and Ávila in search of scenes that reflected the everyday customs of rural Spain. In Room 45, our collection of works by Paul Cezanne, Edgar Degas and George Bellows will be enriched by two exceptional loans: a stunning painting by the American artist Marsden Hartley (1877–1943), and the only Blue Period work by Pablo Picasso (1881–1973) currently on display in a London museum. Many important cultural items in the Pacific Cultures Gallery have been on display for decades and require essential specialist conservation for their long-term preservation. Work is being delivered in partnership with the Pacific Islands Council of South Australia (PICSA) and Pasifika community leaders, ensuring cultural knowledge, authority and protocols guide the care and stewardship of ancestral objects. Museum visitors are encouraged to come in before the end of the month to see this important conservation project as it begins. MADRID.- As Christopher Nolan brings Homer’s Odyssey to the screen, the Museo Nacional del Prado is inviting audiences to explore how artists have imagined the ancient world across more than two millennia. The Madrid museum has released a new video that brings together 24 paintings, sculptures and drawings inspired by classical mythology, the Trojan War and the perilous journeys at the heart of Greek and Roman storytelling. Set to Dinamita, a song by Spanish musician La Bien Querida, the sequence moves from the Judgment of Paris and the abduction of Helen to the burning of Troy, the travels of Aeneas and the ordeals of Odysseus. MUDEC presents immersive white thread installation by Chiharu Shiota MILAN.- The Moment the Snow Melts is a new immersive, site-specific installation by Japanese artist Chiharu Shiota, which reimagines the Agora—the heart of MUDEC. The installation transforms this iconic space into an evanescent landscape of white threads cascading vertically from the ceiling. Suspended among them are notes and pieces of paper inscribed with the names of individuals who have crossed our paths, but with whom connections have since been severed. Even before the opening, the public was invited to participate in the installation by contributing personal thoughts or drawings on paper—submitted via a dedicated collection box within the museum or submitted digitally. European Prize for Urban Public Space selects 25 projects addressing climate, mobility and social inclusion BARCELONA.- Twenty-five projects from across Europe have been shortlisted for the 2026 European Prize for Urban Public Space, reflecting a growing effort to rethink how cities respond to climate change, social inequality and the changing demands of mobility. Prado publishes Roberto Longhi's lost essay linking Pedro Berruguete to the court of Urbino MADRID.- More than a century after it was written, a lost essay by the influential Italian art historian Roberto Longhi is being published for the first time by the Museo Nacional del Prado. The text, devoted to the Castilian painter Pedro Berruguete, appears in El solemnísimo maestro Pedro Berruguete, the fifth volume in the Prado’s Bicentennial Collection. Edited by art historian Tommaso Mozzati, the book brings into print a study that helped launch a major and still unresolved debate about artistic exchange between Spain and Italy during the Renaissance. Longhi conceived the essay after traveling through Spain in the summer of 1920.
