GAINESVILLE, FLA.- The Harn Museum of Art at the University of Florida will present more than 60 works by 10 Cuban women artists in the landmark exhibition Layered Lives opening Aug. 25, 2026. Originating from the Discoveries in Art Certilman Family Collection, the exhibition brings together three decades of photography, paintings, ceramics and prints illustrating the resilience, innovation and expansive creativity of Cuban women artists whose layered stories continue to shape our understanding of Cuba and its diaspora. Bringing together works produced over more than six decades, the exhibition traces the continuities and transformations of a practice developed across changing artistic, institutional, and political conditions. Working across painting, drawing, printmaking, performance, assemblage, and relief, Xhafa moves continually between image and object. Everyday things such as shoes, garments, cords, cloth, vessels appear as physical materials incorporated into the work. Attached, folded, covered, or absorbed into dense surfaces, these objects complicate the boundary between representation and material presence. VIENNA.- In the MAK exhibition Kateryna Lysovenko: Borderland (16.9.2026–18.10.2026), the Ukrainian-born, Vienna-based artist Kateryna Lysovenko combines the language of classical painting with contemporary issues. In paintings—some of which were created specifically for the MAK—and selected watercolors, Lysovenko juxtaposes vulnerable bodies, hybrid beings, and mythological tales with heroic narratives of war. She investigates the connections between the body and ideology, using the medium of painting to make life in war and exile a tangible experience.
