NEW YORK, NY.-Scholten Japanese Art opened their Asia Week Autumn 2026 exhibition, Rediscovered Treasures: The León Chattah Collection of Modern Japanese Prints. The exhibition includes a group of seventy works by 20th century shin hanga masters from the ‘hidden’ collection of León Chattah (1934-2025). Recently rediscovered by his family, this significant collection had been tucked away in the back of a closet in a New York City apartment since the early 1980s. The entire collection was acquired (purportedly all at once), from Abraham & Rachel Bornstein, the proprietors of the Boston Book and Art Shop, founded in 1923. Cut from wood into recognisable silhouettes—a tooth, a hairstyle, a slice of cheese, a chicken leg—the works establish a relation between the physical form of the support and the image painted onto it. The two do not necessarily correspond. A recognisable contour can carry an unrelated image, while the image can alter how the contour is perceived. September 09, 1928. Solomon "Sol" LeWitt (September 9, 1928 - April 8, 2007) was an American artist linked to various movements, including conceptual art and minimalism. LeWitt came to fame in the late 1960s with his wall drawings and "structures" (a term he preferred to "sculptures") but was prolific in a wide range of media including drawing, printmaking, photography, painting, installation, and artist's books. He has been the subject of hundreds of solo exhibitions in museums and galleries around the world since 1965.
