MADRID.- After the portfolio review in Madrid at Complejo El Águila the days 11, 12 and 13 June, the jury has decided the Descubrimientos PHE Epson Award among the 110 participants in the reviews in Mexico, Lima and Madrid.
The winner is Alejandra Laviada, young mexican that has participated in Descubrimientos PHE Mexico with the serie Photo Sculptures, that has been outstood because of its originality and aesthetic coherence.
The winner will feature a solo exhibition in the next PHotoEspaña edition.
In Photo Sculptures, Laviada portrays ephemeral sculptures created with found objects in order to alter our conception of everyday objects, record spaces that will be completely demolished or transformed and suggest stories about the people who inhabited them.
The winner will receive her award the next 22nd June in the PHotoEspaña Official Award Ceremony that will take place at Las Naves del Español at Matadero Madrid
Alejandra Laviada (México, 1980) studied painting at the Rhode Island School of Design and subsequently received a masters degree in photography from the School of Visual Arts. In 2008 she had a solo exhibition at Danziger Projects and took part in a group exhibition at the NY Photo Festival. She was named a Wallpaper Emerging Photographer in 2008. She was selected for the PEEK Festival of Emerging Photographers organised by Arte+Commerce in 2007 and received an honourable mention at the 12th Photography Biennial in the Centro de la Imagen in 2006.

Descubrimientos PHE is a professional platform whose objective is the promotion of emerging photographers. Descubrimientos PHE Award prizes the winner with a solo exhibition in the next editon of PHotoEspaña.
This year it offers important innovations. The programme is enlarged and takes place in Lima and Mexico DF in addition to Madrid thanks to the collaboration of the AECID (Spanish Agency for International Development Cooperation).
Descubrimientos PHE enables emerging photographers to have professional encounters with important international reviewers.Among the 1,164 portfolios from photographers of 65 nationalities that were received in this edition, a selection of 110 participates in the three portfolio reviews: 20 in Descubrimientos PHE Mexico DF, 20 in Lima and 70 in Madrid.
The works of the finalist in Descubrimientos PHE Madrid can be visited at Complejo El Águila till 26th July. Furthermore, the Instituto Cervantes in Madrid host Resilience, till 20th September, a selection of several works that have participated in the portfolio review in Lima and Mexico.
