Moss Galleries Portland Presents New Work by Painter Anne Neely

Anne Neely | See Through Sea, 2026. Oil on linen, 60 x 90 in.

PORTLAND, ME.- Moss Galleries presents Anne Neely: Wonder of the Light, an exhibition of new work by acclaimed painter and printmaker Anne Neely. On view through August 15, the exhibition explores the natural world, memory, vulnerability, and personal forces that shape our lives. For nearly five decades, Neely has created work rooted in a deep reverence for the natural world and a profound awareness of its fragility. Over the last two years, she has developed a new body of paintings forged through her experience of surviving cancer and her sustained, meditative, and physical practice of painting. Neely’s paintings mark a shift in both process and perspective. After receiving an ovarian cancer diagnosis in 2024, her dialogue with paint and canvas turned inward. What began as poured “explosions” that echoed the tumor inside her body gradually evolved into vertical ... More

PARIS.- Christie's unveils masterpieces from the Graziella Patiño de Ortiz Linares Collection, to be offered at auction in Paris on 23 September. Assembled over four decades by Graziella Ortiz and her husband, the collection is widely recognised as one of the most remarkable ever devoted to the decorative arts and Old Master paintings. The presence of major works previously in this collection in prestigious institutions such as the Getty Museum, the Musée du Louvre, and the Château de Versailles attests to its importance. While offering insightful perspectives across different periods of art history, this outstanding classical collection is primarily centered on the Régence period and the reign of Louis XV. The selection of approximately sixty lots is structured around three main fields: paintings and drawings, including a group of masterpieces by Watteau, Fragonard, and Ingres; furniture and works of art; and silver, a field ... At its centre is an exquisitely detailed miniature of the monarch.

LONDON.- A remarkable pendant featuring a micro-carved portrait of Queen Elizabeth I has come to light as an exceptionally rare survival of Renaissance craftsmanship. Dating to around 1600 and therefore probably made during the final years of her reign, the work is thought to be a rare lifetime portrait of Elizabeth I in amber — then prized across Europe as “Baltic gold.” At its centre is an exquisitely detailed miniature of the monarch, carved in white amber after a widely circulated engraving by Crispijn de Passe the Elder, itself based on a portrait drawn from life by Isaac Oliver, circa 1590–1592. Although an idealised image following a recognised and carefully controlled pattern, the cameo presents Elizabeth I in her assured maturity, her distinctive features and elaborate dress rendered with remarkable precision in an intimate, three-dimensional form. The extraordinary level of detail, the crispness of the carved surface, and the delicacy ... More

Museo Thyssen-Bornemisza unveils results of Rubens restoration and technical study   Sotheby's to offer a rare life size bronze cast of legendary ancient sculpture   Sotheby's Modern & Contemporary Art exhibition in London opens ahead of June auctions

Restorer during the restoration process of the painting “Venus and Cupid” by Peter Paul Rubens.

MADRID.- The Museo Nacional Thyssen-Bornemisza is presenting a special exhibition in Room 19 of the permanent collection devoted to the restoration and technical study undertaken on Venus and Cupid by Peter Paul Rubens. This project has allowed the restorers to gain more detailed knowledge of the materials used by the artist and his working methods, as well as to reinstate the painting’s chromatic balance and sense of perspective, which were previously concealed under layers of aged and deteriorated varnish. The project, which lasted a year and a half, included the technical studies and laboratory analyses required in order to proceed to a rigorous restoration of the work, removing the oxidised varnish and consolidating the paint layer in specific areas with the aim of giving the painting greater overall stability that will ensure its optimum conservation in the future. This special display shows the different phases of the restoration process through interactive digital resources that pro ... More

Until the moment the Hamilton Laocoön was made in Paris in 1817, only three other surviving life-size versions in bronze had been successfully realised. Courtesy Sotheby's.

LONDON.- On its discovery in Rome in the early sixteenth century, the ancient marble of Laocoön and his sons instantly established itself as the pinnacle of sculptural achievement. Causing a sensation, the sculpture was immediately recognised as the statue described by Pliny the Elder in his Natural History as being “of all paintings and sculpture, the most worthy of admiration.” It exerted a profound influence on the Renaissance — not least on Michelangelo who, in attendance for its unearthing, considered it “a singular miracle of art.” Arguably the most revered classical statue to have survived from antiquity, it has captivated artists and connoisseurs alike ever since, to become one of the most famous and truly iconic sculptures in art history. Life-size versions of the Laocoön are fantastically rare, given the scale and technical complexity of the composition. Now, on 1 July in London, ... More

Zander Galerie now representing Tina Barney   Aargauer Kunsthaus exhibition revisits the radical, experimental art scene of the 1970s   International exhibition "Café Society" at Dixon Gallery and Gardens centers on Belle Époque Paris

Tina Barney, Self Portrait, 2024 © Tina Barney

COLOGNE.- Zander Galerie announced the representation of acclaimed American photographer Tina Barney. For over four decades, Barney has been a pivotal figure in contemporary photography, renowned for her monumental, brilliantly colored images that offer a narrative, cinematic look into domestic spaces, social rituals, and interpersonal dynamics. By blending the grand scale of traditional history painting with the spontaneity of family snapshots, she began directing her subjects in the 1980s, bringing a unique, detailed intimacy to large-format photography. Barney has also developed a significant body of editorial and fashion work, extending her longstanding exploration of social performance, identity, and the rituals of appearance. This important aspect will be further highlighted in Tina Barney FASHION, a major new publication to be released by Aperture this fall. Barney’s passion for the medium was first ignited while serving as a Junior Council volunteer at MoMA in 1972, launching a d ... More

Exhibition view Together apart: The 1970s and Aarau 12.6.–6.9.2026, Aargauer Kunsthaus. Photo: ullmann.photography.

AARAU.- The 1970s were a period of transformation in Switzerland and internationally: social and artistic conventions were overturned, and independent venues emerged while artists forged new paths into the profession. This exhibition captures the desire for change and experimentation of the times, showing how diverse styles, themes, and media coexisted and intermingled. The exhibition begins by showing works from Aarau’s art scene of the 1970s — with a particular focus on the works of the Ziegelrain studio collective. The artwork from Aarau illustrates how contrasting artistic approaches found bold forms of expression at the same time and in close proximity to one another. Regional and international movements of the 1970s are also shown alongside local artwork: Pop Art by Markus Müller or Herbert Distel are followed by pieces from international movements such as Fluxus and Nouveau Réalisme. ... New dialogue exhibition pairs pioneering sculptor Franz Erhard Walther with Jimmy Robert
FULDA.- Conceiving an exhibition that intertwines the works of Franz Erhard Walther with those of Jimmy Robert isn't obvious; the list of differences in their intentions, their identities, the forms they produce and the media they use, would be very long. And yet, the idea of linking Walther’s colossal and pioneering œuvre, built over six decades in Fulda, Düsseldorf, New York and Hamburg, with that of Robert, who was born on the island of Guadeloupe in 1975 and has lived in various international cities, is captivating. It is an attempt to arrive at an unexpected interpretation of their respective bodies of work and a way to observe how two artists address each other, not in terms of filiation or influence, but rather in terms of correspondence. The curatorial intention here is more poetic than analytical or demonstrative, and consists in finding the rhymes that allow two oeuvres ... More

Mohamed Bourouissa debuts first Swiss solo exhibition focusing on marginalized communities
ZURICH.- Mohamed Bourouissa is a portraitist of our time – storyteller and inventor in one. At the heart of his works are people. Not those on whom the spotlight of media, politics, art and history shines in any case, rather those ‘next door’; those people whose life-stories tell of exclusion, of invisibility, but also of resistance. These are the lives for which Bourouissa makes room in his works. In his first solo exhibition in Switzerland, Bourouissa invites the audience on a journey, from Blida in Algeria, where he was born, via the Parisian suburbs, where he now lives, to Osnabrück in Germany, where the eventful life of his aunt Noubia Meyer drew to a close. Films, objects, AI animations and photographs form the stops along the way, set within immersive spatial experiences. The exhibition begins in Blida, a city in northern Algeria. Not only does Mohamed Bourouissa’s ... More

David Zwirner opens contemporary Los Angeles group exhibition curated by Helen Molesworth
LOS ANGELES, CA.- David Zwirner is presenting California Light and Space (The 21st Century Version), a group exhibition organized by Helen Molesworth at the gallery’s 606 N Western Avenue location in Los Angeles. Featuring a selection of artists who make up the city’s distinctive and vibrant arts scene, the presentation considers how the terroir of Los Angeles—to borrow a term from wine connoisseurship that connotes how a specific ecosystem or geography gives wine an indelible “sense of place”—affects the overarching concerns and tendencies of the work being produced there today. LA is frequently identified with the Light and Space artists of the 1960s and 1970s whose work was characterized by industrial materials, highly finished surfaces, and a preoccupation with perception. Natasja Kensmil transforms Kunstmuseum Den Haag stairwell with a haunting vision of melting glaciers
THE HAGUE.- Inspired by the historic Tapestry Room at Kunstmuseum Den Haag, artist Natasja Kensmil has created Allegory of Glaciers, a new contemporary mural that turns one of the museum’s monumental stairwells into an immersive world of melting ice, mythological figures and layered historical memory. The commission continues a museum tradition in which artists are invited to respond directly to the architecture of the building and to the collection housed within it. In Kensmil’s hands, the stairwell becomes more than a passageway. It is transformed into a dramatic visual environment where drawing, painting, history and climate anxiety meet. Allegory of Glaciers unfolds as a continuous painting made up of several freely hanging canvases, both painted and drawn, across which the mural extends. The arrangement plays with the depth and rhythm of the ... More

"Rather than being given a conventional building plot, we were asked to find the right place for this structure," explains Svein Lund, founding partner and architect at Lundhagem. The design challenge was to enhance visitor flow along the figure-eight pathway that winds through the park. The building itself now forms part of this route, creating a welcoming arrival point and a natural launching point for exploring further. Drawing on Kistefos' heritage ... More

On a day like today, American painter and academic Clyfford Still died
June 23, 1980. Clyfford Still (November 30, 1904 - June 23, 1980) was an American painter, and one of the leading figures in the first generation of abstract expressionists, who developed a new, powerful approach to painting in the years immediately following World War II, and is credited as one of the movement’s pioneers. His shift from representational to abstract painting occurred between 1938 and 1942, earlier than his colleagues like Jackson Pollock and Mark Rothko, who continued to paint in figurative-surrealist styles well into the 1940s.
