Neuberger Museum of Art Announces Important Curatorial Appointment
Helaine Posner named Chief Curator and Deputy Director of Curatorial Affairs of the Neuberger Museum of Art

PURCHASE, NY.- Helaine Posner, well-known contemporary art curator and co-author of the award-winning book After the Revolution: Women Who Transformed Contemporary Art, has been named Chief Curator and Deputy Director of Curatorial Affairs of the Neuberger Museum of Art. The appointment was announced today by Thom Collins, Director of the Museum, the tenth largest college art museum in the nation, with an internationally renowned collection. Most recently, Ms. Posner was an independent curator and Adjunct Curator at the American Federation of Arts in New York. She will assume her new position on November 17th, 2008.

“We could not be more pleased to welcome Helaine Posner, a distinguished scholar and respected curator to the museum,” Mr. Collins said. “Her exceptional background makes her the perfect choice to further the Neuberger tradition of presenting invigorating presentations of and insights about the best of contemporary and modern art.”

In her new position, Ms. Posner will be responsible for organizing monographic and thematic exhibitions that further the museum’s mission to educate the broadest possible audience in, about, and through the visual arts. She will work closely with Mr. Collins to forge the future exhibition program, and with the Purchase College leadership to more fully incorporate the resources of the Neuberger Museum into the educational experience at the College. She will also collaborate with the Friends of the Neuberger Museum and the wider community to enhance the Museum’s role in the region.

“I have long admired the Neuberger Museum’s modern and contemporary exhibitions and collections, and am absolutely delighted to serve as its first Chief Curator and Deputy Director of Curatorial Affairs,” Ms. Posner said. “The Neuberger provides an ideal environment for presenting and exploring the most interesting new art and ideas, featuring the work of the best emerging and established artists in intelligent, inventive ways.”

She said she plans to organize individual and thematic exhibitions that continue this practice, focusing on art that engages life experience and the larger world. Ms. Posner has a special interest in art by women and has presented the work of such important figures as installation artist Ann Hamilton, sculptor and printmaker Kiki Smith, and photographer Lorna Simpson. “I look forward to building on the Neuberger Museum’s impressive record and offering an inclusive program reflecting the range and quality of work made by artists today.”

Ms. Posner, a native of New York, worked as an independent curator and writer over the past ten years, and as a curator for the American Federation of Arts in New York. In 1999, she was co-commissioner of the U. S. Pavilion at the 48th Venice Biennale where she and museum director Katy Kline presented a major site-specific installation by the sculptor Ann Hamilton. Some of Ms. Posner’s other independent projects include Kiki Smith: Telling Tales, a multi-media exhibition of the artist’s work curated for the International Center of Photography in New York, and two thematic exhibitions, The Culture of Violence and Utopia/Post-Utopia: Conceptual Photography and Video from Cuba, organized for and presented at university museums. Her major exhibition for AFA was the first mid-career survey of Lorna Simpson’s elegant and provocative photographic works and video-installations. This exhibition traveled to the Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles; the Miami Art Museum; and the Whitney Museum of American Art in 2006-07. Each exhibition was accompanied by a catalogue.

Her recent book projects include the first monograph on the work of Kiki Smith originally published by Bulfinch Press, with an updated and revised version released by Monacelli Press in 2005. In 2007, After the Revolution: Women Who Transformed Contemporary Art, written in collaboration with art critics Eleanor Heartney and Nancy Princenthal, and curator Sue Scott was published. This book describes the impact of women on contemporary art since the advent of the feminist movement and examines the work of twelve artists who have had significant careers over the past thirty-five years. Ms. Posner and her colleagues are currently working on a second volume titled Taking Control: Women Artists in the New Millennium, which will focus on artists born post-1960 and will reflect the globalization of the contemporary art world.

A graduate of Georgetown University, Ms. Posner earned her master’s degree in art history from George Washington University. For more than two decades, she has curated, lectured, and published in the fields of contemporary art and visual culture. She was Curator of the MIT List Visual Arts Center; Cambridge, MA; Chief Curator of the National Museum of Women in the Arts, Washington, DC; and Director of the University Gallery, University of Massachusetts at Amherst. At these venues she co-organized such exhibitions as Leon Golub and Nancy Spero: War and Memory for the inaugural year of the American Center in Paris; The Masculine Masquerade; and Mirror Images: Women, Surrealism, and Self-Representation; as well as individual exhibitions of such artists as Martin Puryear, Anish Kapoor, Judy Pfaff, Joseph Kosuth, and Glenn Ligon. Ms. Posner has also participated in prestigious panels and juries, and lectured widely.

The Neuberger Museum of Art was founded more than 30 years ago as a cultural and intellectual center for modern and contemporary art. Its core collection of 20th century paintings and sculpture contains primary examples of the movements and individuals who shaped modern art. The tenth largest college art museum in the nation with an internationally renowned collection of over 6,000 works of art in all media, the Museum is named after financier and founding patron Roy R. Neuberger, whose extensive art collection forms the core of the Museum’s holdings and who continues to be an active and involved donor.
