CLAREMONT, CA.-New media artist, author, and lecturer C.E.B Reas will discuss the complex processes of his practice at the Claremont Museum of Art on Saturday, October 13 at 3 p.m. Reas is considered at the forefront of new media art and is asked to speak around the globe on this ever-evolving medium and his groundbreaking role within it. The event is free for members and $5 for non-members. Tickets, which include museum entrance, can be purchased at the door the day of the event.
In Reas’ piece TI, a dynamic installation that is part of the Museum’s current Ephemeral: Explorations in Light exhibit, Reas merges technology with the fundamentals of art by creating software that generates fluid and delicate compositions that seemingly float above the floor like lily pads. Referencing Sol LeWitt’s wall drawings, TI implements the computer as draftsperson, creating constantly changing drawings that the viewer witnesses in action.
Reas refers to this as “processing” or “process drawing.” Processing is a computer programming language and environment for creating images, animation and interaction. With Ben Fry, Reas initiated Processing.org and published Processing: A Programming Handbook for Visual Designers and Artists, a 736-page introduction to programming within the context of visual media (MIT Press, 2006). At his October 13 talk, he will elaborate on this complicated and fascinating process.
Reas is an associate professor of the Department of Design | Media Arts at UCLA. His classes provide a foundation for thinking about computers and the Internet as an art medium and set a structure for advanced inquiry into synthesis of culture, technology, and aesthetics. He was previously one of the founding professors at the Interaction Design Institute Ivrea in Italy. Reas was a graduate student and researcher at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology’s Media Lab from 1999-2001.
His essays have appeared in the books Network Practices (Princeton Architectural Press), Aesthetic Computing (MIT Press), Code: The Language of Our Time (Hatje Cantz), and the Programming Cultures issue of Architectural Design (Wiley).
He has lectured at The Royal College of Art (London), The Royal Academy of Art (The Hague), NTT ICC (Tokyo), and at artist-run spaces including Machine Project (Los Angeles), Atelier Nord (Oslo), and Automaten (Berlin).
He has exhibited his work at Laboral (Gijon, Spain), The Cooper-Hewitt Museum (New York), the National Museum for Art, Architecture, and Design (Oslo), Telic Arts Exchange (Los Angeles), <>TAG (The Hague), Ego Park (Oakland), bitforms (New York), BANK (Los Angeles), [DAM] Berlin, and at festivals including Sonar (Barcelona), Ars Electronica (Linz), and Microwave (Hong Kong).
Reas is one of five artists in Ephemeral: Explorations in Light, running through November 18. The exhibit, curated by Pilar Tompkins, is a multi-media show featuring dynamic light installations and sculptures by Reas, Iñaki Bonillas (Mexico City), Elaine Buckholtz (San Francisco), Thomas Glassford (Mexico City), and Won Ju Lim (Los Angeles).
