Symposium Images of Society: Variable Trajectories

MONTREAL.-The McCord Museum is pleased to announce it will soon be hosting a symposium entitled Images of Society: Variable Trajectories; a unique opportunity to focus on the evolution and perception of vernacular and documentary photography through past decades.

In the course of the symposium, eight different lecturers will share their knowledge, these enlightening perspectives being the result of their research projects. Participants will be thrilled by the variety of rich and relevant themes and issues : What use is photography ? (Martha Langford), Configurations. Une exposition hyper-moderne ? (Hélène Samson), Images nomades. Usages mémoriels de la photographie et immigration (Vincent Lavoie), De la propagande à l’engagement (Pierre Dessureault), Bewunderung und Ehrfurcht – Wonder and Awe (David Dorenbaum), L’allégorie comme archive (Olivier Asselin), Usages des espaces urbains, entre actualités, archives et oeuvres (Anne Bénichou) and Relocating the vernacular (Zoë Tousignant).

Acknowledging the tremendous impact photography has had on the memories we have in common, the McCord Museum has already given an important showcase to this form of art. The exhibition entitled Configurations is an eloquent example of this: the particularity of this project was to transpose a certain number of pictures chosen among the famous Notman Archives, from the exhibition hall to the street. This symposium is seen as another opportunity, a complementary path where one can explore and share an amount of discoveries linked to the art of photography.

The symposium Images of Society: Variable Trajectories will take place on Thursday, September 20th. The schedule goes from 9:30 am to 5 pm. This event is opened to everyone and is free of charge. To conclude this memorable day, participants are invited to a cocktail, a tribute to the partners of Configurations.

The complete program is available on-line at the following address: http://www.musee-mccord.qc.ca/en/activities/colloquia/
To register : 514 398-7100 ext. 540 or linda.st-pierre@mccord.mcgill.ca
