BERLIN.- On Thursday, June 7, 2007 Villa Grisebach will bring an outstanding selection of 300 lots of Classical and Contemporary Photography to auction. Of special interest for collectors with an eye for portrait-photography will be an exquisite range from the rarely on the German market available American photographer Mike Disfarmer ( 5.000-7.000) to Hugo Erfurth (Käthe Kollwitz, Heinrich George, each 6.000-7.000), Walker Evans with his delicate portrait study of Berenice Abbott ( 12.000-15.000), and Paul Outerbridge Jr.'s unique self-portrait ( 6.000-8.000), to Irving Penn and Eward Steichen with their different "interpretations" of Marlene Dietrich ( 10.000-12.000; 18.000-20.000). Extraordinary are also Ormond Giglis portraits of German actress Hildegard Knef ( 4.000-5.000) and the Canadian pianist Glenn Gould ( 2.500-3.000).
Other highlights of classical photography will include Leni Riefenstahl's rare vintage print "Turmspringerin" (Diver) from 1936 ( 7.000-9.000), Diane Arbus' "A Family One Evening In A Nudist Camp" ( 9.000-12.000), Edward Quigley's surreal "Woman With Hat And Veil" ( 6.000-8.000), Walker Evans' untitled Polaroid from his late 1970s work ( 4.000-6.000) and Umbos' (Otto Umbehr) rare large-scale self-portrait - taken with a special camera in 1935 ( 12.000-15.000).
Top lot from the Contemporary section is Dieter Blum's unique print of a Man Smoking from the series "Tasting Freedom" for Marlboro ( 30.000-35.000), followed by Loretta Lux' "Troll 3" ( 15.000-20.000) and William Eggleston's untitled Dye-Transfer from the portfolio "Troubled Waters" ( 14.000-16.000). Further highlights are works by Nan Goldin, Hellen van Meene, Andrew Moore, Michael Najjar, Sebastião Salgado, Stephen Shore, Frank Thiel and Jan Wenzel.
"The Kabinett" - a new section in the catalog that from now on will be dedicated to a particular theme or special subject matter - will present, for its premiere, 10 selected works by photographers from the legendary Berlin Agency "Ostkreuz": Sibylle Bergemann, Harald Hauswald, Ute Mahler, Werner Mahler, Maurice Weiss, Jordis Antonia Schlösser, Linn Schröder, Pepa Hristova, and Julian Röders monumental colour photograph of the protests against the G 8 summit in Genoa 2001.
