LONDON.- A masterpiece by Sir Peter Lely, one of the most celebrated artists of Restoration Britain and Principal Painter to Charles II, will go back on display at Audley End House in Essex after a two-year conservation project by charity English Heritage to restore its luminosity. Long displayed at Audley End, an estate owned by Charles II when the portrait was created and now cared for by English Heritage, the painting has formed an important part of the house’s historic collection for over 200 years. The 1673 masterpiece, entitled Portrait of the Artist with Hugh May and a Bust of Grinling Gibbons, is the definitive self-portrait of Sir Peter Lely and encapsulates the creative circle at the heart of Charles II’s court. Ai Weiwei. Updated Edition Hardcover, 9.8 x 13.1 in., 8.88 lb, 736 pages ISBN 978-3-7544-0427-0

NEW YORK, NY.- Ai Weiwei is famous for much more than his art. As a champion for the right to free expression and against arbitrary state power, his actions reach far beyond the art world. His work is infused with a deep social and political commitment: when he brings 1,001 Chinese citizens from all classes and regions to Documenta 12, when he strews over 100 million hand-made porcelain sunflower seeds across the Turbine Hall at the Tate Modern, when he creates a frieze of school bags commemorating the many children who fell victim to the tragedy of the Sichuan earthquake, or when he visits the refugee camps of the world to engage with often-ignored individual fates in his film Human Flow. In 2011, Ai was detained for 81 days by the Chinese police for his relentless questioning of authorities, and his passport was taken away. Despite international protests he received it back only in 2015. Finally traveling outside of China again, setting up base in Berlin and lately in Portugal, he has now become a ... More

DALLAS, TX.- For generations of residents across Washington, D.C., Maryland and Virginia, a trip to Hechinger’s hardware store was a ritual as familiar as the neighborhoods it served — a place where paint cans, power tools and bins of nails promised possibility. Comprising more than 340 works drawn from the celebrated Hechinger Collection, the auction represents a rare opportunity to acquire works from one of the more conceptually unified and culturally resonant collections of 20th-century art assembled in the United States. The quintessential California Modernist: Richard Neutra and his search for modern architecture   Gutai master Takesada Matsutani returns to London after a decade   Fondazione Prada announces its 2026 program in Milan and Venice

Neutra. 45th Ed. Hardcover, 6.1 x 8.5 in., 2.45 lb, 512 pages ISBN 978-3-7544-0004-3

NEW YORK, NY.- Originally from Vienna, Richard Neutra came to America early in his career, settling in California. His influence on postwar architecture is undisputed, the sunny climate and rich landscape being particularly suited to his cool, sleek modern style. Neutra had a keen appreciation for the relationship between people and nature; his trademark plate glass walls and ceilings which turn into deep overhangs have the effect of connecting the indoors with the outdoors. His ability to incorporate technology, aesthetics, science, and nature into his designs brought him to the forefront of Modernist architecture. In this volume, more than 100 of Neutra’s works (private homes, schools, and public buildings) are gathered together, illustrated by hundreds of photographs, including those of Julius Shulman and other prominent photographers. American photographer Julius Shulman’s images of Californian architecture have burned themselves into the retina of the 20th century. A book on modern arc ... More

Devan Shimoyama, L’Empereur, oil, colored pencil, fabric, sequins, glitter and Flashe on canvas, 84 x 68 inches. Courtesy of De Buck Gallery and the artist.

GLASSBORO, NJ.- Devan Shimoyama draws equally from classical mythology and the cultural landscape of his youth to create works that center the Queer Black male form. Through self-portraiture and tableaux, he reflects on the politics of Queer experience while navigating his own personal narrative. Working across a wide range of materials and techniques, Shimoyama explores the tension between celebration and silence within Queer culture and sexuality. Referencing the dramatic sensibilities of painters such as Caravaggio and Goya, he layers his surfaces with jewels, glitter, rhinestones, and sequins to evoke both the beauty and alienation of the Black Queer body. His most recent body of work is inspired by the Major Arcana of the Tarot deck. Shimoyama stages scenes of transformation alluding to the dialogue between genuine and superficial change. The series reflects on our desire to present contained and perfect versions of ourselves, while suggesting ... More

KASSEL.- The documenta Institut announces its first research exhibition at the Kasseler Kunstverein. With The China Moment, the documenta Institut focuses on a decisive phase in contemporary Chinese art. Spanning the period from the 1980s to the present day, the exhibition examines how art in China reflected society during a time of profound transformation against the backdrop of a shift from globalization to the multipolar present. The 1980s marked the beginning of a period of profound political and economic change. Under the influence of Deng Xiaoping's reforms, a new artistic language emerged that combined individuality, social participation and humanistic perspectives. At the same time, China's opening up and increasing international networking offered new spaces for artistic experimentation and exchange with global discourses on individualism and social transformation. The exhibition shows how art not only reflected social developments, but often anticipated them. It reveals how the relati ... More

LONDON.- On January 20, 2026, Lévy Gorvy Dayan opens an exhibition of Juanita McNeely’s revolutionary oeuvre, marking the first solo presentation of the late New York painter in London. Spanning paintings and works on paper from the 1960s to the 2010s, the exhibition charts five decades of her uncompromising practice, defined by a fearless and provocative approach to the human body. A foundational feminist voice, McNeely worked amid shifting artistic, social, and political backdrops with visceral clarity and force. The exhibition unfolds across two floors of the gallery’s home in the storied building that once housed one of London’s first members’ clubs for women, a historic site dedicated to women’s autonomy and community. McNeely (1936–2023) emerged as an artist in New York in the late 1960s, turning away from the dominant influence of Abstract Expressionism to focus on figuration and the depiction of ... More

Here fleshy animal hides meet zoomorphic digital animation for projects that work to rouse the underbelly of our world, reaching towards the dreams and incantations of another. In Spring 2026 Montague comes to Aughrim to present 'Son of honey-bag', a new body of work in development. As part of this Montague will undertake a series of exercises and conversations, responding to the landscape through the perspective of divining, milk production, mythologies and acupuncture for land. Spray cans and ceramics: Six street artists reimagine Delft Blue heritage
DELFT.- What happens when spray can meets paintbrush? That question takes center stage from March 7, 2026, in the exhibition Urban Blue – from Bricks to Tiles at Royal Delft Museum. In collaboration with STRAAT Museum, six international street artists present their interpretation of the centuries-old craft of Delft Blue. This results in creations that blend tradition, modern art, the expressive energy of street art and the unique signature of each artist. “In November 2025, during the first Artist-in-Residence period, the artists succeeded in translating the rich history of the world-famous Delft Blue into a contemporary urban visual language. They surprised, challenged, and inspired us, bridging tradition and innovation,” says Liz Groen (Manager Museum Collection & Exhibitions). Stephan Reusse explores the visible and invisible at Parrotta Contemporary
COLOGNE.- Parrotta Contemporary Art Gallery will present works by photographer and media artist Stephan Reusse from February 6 to March 28, 2026, simultaneously at its locations in Cologne and at Burg Lede in Bonn. The two-part exhibition focuses on two central strands of his extensive body of work: the conceptual portrait series Collaborations in Cologne and the thermographic works in Bonn. Both groups of works are part of a multimedia oeuvre that has, for decades, explored the conditions, possibilities, and limits of photographic image production. His interest in photography extends beyond its function as representation to encompass it as a technical process that generates meaning through performative and relational practices, opening up transitions between visibility and invisibility, presence and absence. Stephan Reusse foregrounds the performative ... More

Sophia Al-Maria reclaims the Toyota Hilux at Art Basel Qatar
DUBAI.- The Third Line will present HiLux, a new body of work by Sophia Al-Maria debuting at the inaugural Art Basel Qatar 2026. Through a newly commissioned large-scale scroll installation, works on paper, and an original shayla recording, the artist reconsiders the Toyota Hilux pickup truck as an intimate carrier of history, desire, and survival across the landscapes of the Gulf. The works expand on Al-Maria’s ongoing investigations into extractive modernity and embodied memory, reclaiming “Gulf futurism,” a term she coined earlier in her career to critique the rapid modernization of the region. At the center of the presentation is a scroll that unfurls across the length of the booth. Painted in watercolor and acrylics, it traces a thorned, flaming, decal-like trajectory reminiscent of Gulf truck ornamentation. The scroll format evokes both infinitude and exhaust, echoing ... Kunstmuseen Krefeld present their 2026 exhibition highlights
KREFELD.- In the 2026 exhibition year at the Kunstmuseen Krefeld, the productive dialogue between art and craft takes center stage—from both historical and contemporary perspectives. Museum Director Katia Baudin explains: “The connection between the fine and applied arts is part of the Kunstmuseen Krefeld’s very DNA. This interdisciplinary mindset also provides the framework for our 2026 exhibitions: they demonstrate how closely artistic practices can be tied to craft techniques and materials, and how compellingly both historical and contemporary positions evolve at the intersection of art and design.” The power of Acaye Kerunen’s practice (born 1981 in Kampala, Uganda) lies in her unique fusion of traditional natural materials and a collaborative, community-based approach to artmaking. Working with handwoven textiles created collectively by women ... More

Laura J. Padgett navigates the estrangement and intimacy of the natural world at Galerie-Pete-Sillem
FRANKFURT.- With her new work "Bliss", Laura J. Padgett turns to our complex and often erratic relationship with nature—one shaped by longing and control, intimacy and estrangement. Her photographs highlight how artificial evocations of the natural world can bring solace and reflect our own imperfections. "These images are ideas of natural phenomena in their direct relation to humanity. They are faulty, but essentially precious." Laura J. Padgett A catalogue with an essay by David Matless will accompany the exhibition. Laura J. Padgett (b. 1958 in Cambridge, USA) received her BFA in painting from Pratt Institute in Brooklyn, New York. She continued her studies in film and photography at the Städelschule from 1983 to 1985 and received her MA in Art History and Aesthetics in 1994 from the Johann-Wolfgang-Goethe University, both in Frankfurt am Main. Bryony Rose debuts immersive ceramic installation in London
LONDON.- The work of Bryony Rose takes inspiration from fleeting, often banal, personal memories, that are expanded and elaborated upon to create eerie cultural narratives. In this her first solo exhibition with Cooke Latham, Rose creates numerous ceramic tiled panels in which streetlamps and snowflakes create a dizzying repeated motif. Down the centre of the gallery runs a ‘motorway’ and ‘overpass’ made from artist designed tables, which in turn are scattered with ceramic pigeons and cars. The installation pays homage to the modernist decorative heritage of Glasgow and specifically the work of Charles Rennie Mackintosh, but the nineties can also be traced in the work, a nod to the legacy of Ikea and flatpack Skandi modernism. Rose is drawn to the inherent familiarity of the tile as a form, its utilitarianism and domesticity. Rather than self-contained ... More

The architecture of rebellion: Daniel Nuñez makes his New York solo debut at GR Gallery
NEW YORK, NY.- GR gallery will present ‘Misfits’, the first New York City solo exhibition by Daniel Nuñez. The exhibition brings together a new body of work comprising paintings on canvas and drawings, offering an in-depth look at the artist’s most recent explorations. In Misfits, Nuñez examines the subtleties of everyday life through a lens of irony, freedom, and quiet rebellion. His works transform ordinary situations into spaces of creative tension, where personal expression emerges against the constraints of social norms. By amplifying the overlooked and the familiar, Nuñez reveals the wild, instinctive energy that often lies beneath the surface of the commonplace. The exhibition is dedicated to those who exist outside prescribed systems of conformity: individuals who choose independence over acceptance, who bend rules without crossing into transgression, and who embrace solitude as a form of ...
