Those walking through central Helsinki in the summer of 2022 may remember the sight: hundreds of used chairs and wooden objects hung from the roof of Lasipalatsi (Glass Palace), appearing to spill over the edge of the building towards the street. Now, Tadashi Kawamata’s The Nest has been selected for the cover of legendary musician Peter Gabriel’s single Face the Wall. The cover image was taken by photographer Mika Huisman for Amos Rex. In a comment published on his website, Gabriel says he fell in love with the work at first sight. “When I saw The Nest, I fell in love with it. To me, the wall is there, big, solid, you know, a bit like death. These messy human chairs are falling over the wall and, somehow, they spill over the top. LONDON.- Long before photographs of Egypt became familiar through textbooks, tourism campaigns and museum displays, making a picture beside the Nile was a slow, technically demanding process. Cameras were bulky, chemicals had to be carried through heat and dust, and every negative required careful preparation in the field. Yet it was precisely under those conditions that some of the images that helped define Europe’s visual idea of Egypt were made. A selection of those photographs is now on view at Colnaghi London as part of Out of the Sand: Ancient Egypt Rediscovered, an exhibition that brings together 19th-century photographic material documenting temples, monuments and archaeological sites across Egypt. She exhibited regularly and she and her sister Martha were considered the best flower painters in oils. Annie painted flowers; with roses and orchids being favoured. She exhibited regularly and despite her gender other artists bought her work. Moreover, both the Royal Academy and John Ruskin were known for their poor regard for women artists and despite this Ruskin continued to compliment her work and the Royal Academy saw her nominated to be an associate member.
