PASADENA, CA .- ArtCenter College of Design Vice President Stephen Nowlin announced today that the College has named Julie Joyce to the new position of senior curator in the College’s Exhibitions Department. The appointment is part of a commitment to ambitious art and design exhibition programming for various spaces at ArtCenter’s multiple locations.

Prior to her position at Santa Barbara, Joyce served as gallery director and curator at the Harriet and Charles Luckman Fine Arts Complex at California State University, Los Angeles. She has organized solo exhibitions artists such as Jessica Bronson, Minerva Cuevas, Charles Garabedian, Jack Goldstein, Todd Gray, Hew Locke, Yunhee Min, Yinka Shonibare, Valeska Soares, Marnie Weber and others. She initiated seven nationally traveling exhibitions including the acclaimed Kim Jones: A Retrospective (2006-08), co-curated with Sandra Firmin. Significant group exhibitions organized by Joyce include the craft-focused Labour & Wait (2013), and the all-female exhibition Body Double (2007), co-curated with Marco Rios for The Luckman. She has also brought significant projects to Los Angeles by Charles Gaines, General Idea and David Reed. She served on the exhibition committee for African American Artists in Los Angeles, A Survey Exhibition (2004-05).

Joyce received a BA in Fine and Communication Arts from Loyola Marymount University and a MA in Art History and Museum Studies from the University of Southern California. In 2015, she was a visiting scholar at the American Academy of Art in Rome. Three of her exhibitions have received nominations for “Best Show” awards by the International Association of Art Critics USA section.

Essays by Joyce have appeared in catalogues published by The MIT Press, The Studio Museum in Harlem, the Corcoran Gallery of Art, LACE (Los Angeles Contemporary Exhibitions) and other institutions. She has lectured and been a panelist at a variety of venues including CalArts, Roski School of Fine Arts at the University of Southern California and ArtCenter. She has taught at Cal State L.A., Whittier College, Otis College of Art and Design and USC Department of Fine Arts. She has served as a member of the Finance, Audit & Fundraising Initiatives Committee, 2017-2019, for the Association of Art Museum Curators/AAMC Foundation.
