NEW YORK, NY.- Created by one of the leading poster artists of the early 20th century, this promotional advertisement for Peugeot is expected to fetch up to $60,000 at Swann Auction Galleries’ Graphic Design auction on May 23.

Along with Cassandre, Jean Carlu and Paul Colin, Charles Loupot (1892-1962) inherited the mantle of the fin de siècle pioneers of poster design, creating a highly graphic look inspired by Cubism and Art Deco that was to dominate inter-war poster art in the 1920s and ’30s.

In this 1926 design, measuring more than 5ft across, Loupot captures the sense of dynamism and speed of the national brand Peugeot in the year that it separated its cycle and motor divisions as it moved its business into the modern era of the car.

Two other posters in the sale by Loupot demonstrate his talent for arresting designs. Twining, from 1930, advertising the celebrated brand of tea, and Lion Noir from 1949, promoting shoe polish, are each estimated at $30,000 to $40,000.

Across the Channel in London, the biggest name in poster design for London Transport was Edward McKnight Kauffer (1890-1954), whose 1931 Deco design Shop between 10 and 4/And by Underground is estimated at $8,000 to $12,000.

With more than 270 lots on offer, the sale includes designs from the late 19th century up to the 21st century and covers a huge range of commercial activity, from travel and fashion to alcohol and technology, as well as sport, art and entertainment. Even political propaganda features.

Among the most striking designs are the Austrian and German Secessionist posters of the late 19th and early 20th century, such as the colourful 1908 poster Kaiser - Jubilaeums / Wien by Ferdinand Ludwig Graf, which is estimated at $5,000 to $7,500.

The Art Deco section includes nearly 20 works by Cassandre, led by Triplex, a 1931 design estimated at $20,000 to $30,000.

Artist & Exhibition posters feature designs by Andy Warhol, Georgia O’Keeffe, Keith Haring and Roy Lichtenstein, whose prices rise into the thousands of dollars, while almost 30 designs relating to rock and roll and psychedelia promote concerts at iconic venues like the Fillmore, featuring bands and musicians like Jefferson Airplane, Jimi Hendrix, Pink Floyd and The Doors.

“The auction is filled with delightful surprises including images by well-known designers that seldom appear at auction, such as Charles Loupot's Wanneroil, 1926, and several designs by Tadanori Yokoo which we believe may never before have appeared at auction,” said Swann Auction Galleries President Nicholas D Lowry. “Our cover lot is a never-before-seen collection of 36 pamphlets intended as tools to help salesmen increase their performance, designed with an unerring Art Deco mastery and sense of colour. The sale also features corporate propaganda posters from Facebook.”

Live online bidding will be available to bidders from all over the world.
