Seven Tips for an Art Enthusiast to Use a Blog to Stand Out

Within the art world, there are a variety of avenues to consider for careers. Whether you'd like to become an art curator, buyer or an art history teacher, there's an avenue for it. However, it's not uncommon to experience a lot of competition in these realms. This is why starting a blog is an excellent idea for an art enthusiast to consider. Consider these eight reasons why you should use a blog as a jumpstart to your career in art.

1. It's easy to start.
It takes nothing to head over to a domain site, purchase a domain and start a website. You only need a few bucks to get started. Plus, if you don't want to pay for the initial fees, there are tons of free platforms that will allow you to blog. You can share the content with your friends and family members to start. As you continue to become consistent, you can develop a strong marketing plan that'll attract new eyeballs. Use strategies like video marketing and search engine optimization as long-term strategies to help you get ahead.

2. You can prove your ability to be a self-starter.
When you're able to show employers that you have the discipline and consistency to work on your own, this is a trait that will stand out. In the beginning stages, most bloggers don't get paid. When you're able to commit to a task for months without any monetization strategies in place, this is one of the best ways to show that money isn't your sole motivator. While the money is good, your passion for art is what feeds you the most.

3. You can build a following.
As you continue to work on cultivating great content, you can build a following that will enjoy what you have to say. Do this by using a few platforms to your advantage. These platforms include social media, podcasts and email marketing. You can use social media platforms to immediately get the word out about each post. As you continue in that vein, you'll want to actively seek out people who can help you increase your following. Whether you find influencers, fellow bloggers or podcasters, find ways to feature your content and persona in new spaces.

4. It'll help with your credibility.
When an employer is looking at your resume, there's only so much that they can tell through reading a piece of paper. However, if they can look at past blog posts, YouTube videos and podcast interviews, they can learn more about who you are and what drives you. A blog can easily serve as its own credible source for your work.

5. You can monetize it.
You can always monetize your blog. If you do it well, it can serve as its own strong income stream. You can write eBooks about how to curate and detect great art. Develop partnerships with big brands to showcase sponsored blog posts or social media posts. If you choose to include YouTube videos in your marketing strategy, allow your videos to run ads. Monetization can also come in the form of donations. Put a PayPal link on a visible portion of the webpage. When people love your content, they can choose to donate. When you open up an email list and get people to join it, produce a weekly newsletter that talks about current events in the art world and in your world. Include affiliate links to various products and services that you enjoy. As people click those links to purchase the recommended items, you'll gain a commission.

6. It's an underdeveloped niche you can really own.
If you take a look online, popular culture doesn't really include a ton of art influencers. You can own this niche by teaching Millennials how to find fine art, appreciate it and collect. You can show the average person how to properly invest in fine art pieces that will appreciate in value. You might even decide that you'd like to show people how to include fine art in their home decor. Write a weekly column where you collaborate with a new interior designer. People can send pictures and questions regarding their homes and how they can improve it with art. As you own this niche, you'd stand out as a trailblazer in the online art world.

7. It'll serve as its own online resume.
When you're really passionate about a topic and you create an entire online presence surrounding it, it's clear that you love it. If you've been faithful with the blog production for at least six months to a year, it'll show that you're dedicated. Plus, it'll showcase your expertise in a way that a resume can't. If you decide to use your blog in order to help you get a job, potential employers would love to see that you've been actively paying attention to what's been happening in the art world.
