NEW ORLEANS, LA.-
Susan M. Taylor, the Montine McDaniel Freeman Director at the New Orleans Museum of Art
(NOMA), has announced the appointment of Gabrielle Wyrick as the Deputy Director for Learning and Engagement, a member of the museums senior management team. Wyrick, who was named a 2018 Museum Educator of the Year by the National Art Education Association (NAEA), will begin her work at NOMA October 1, 2018 and will lead NOMAs Department of Learning and Engagement.
NOMA is a leader in new trends in museum education, including innovative initiatives in programming for early childhood education, teens, community connections, and the performing arts, said Susan Taylor. Drawing upon her exceptional experience, Gabrielle will be instrumental in continuing to enhance the museums vision for Learning and Engagement. We are delighted to welcome her expertise to the team.
In this leadership role, Wyrick will spearhead the interpretive aspects of the museum, developing inclusive and engaging strategies and experiences, including participatory learning and digital projects. Additionally, she will supervise the design of public programs such as lectures, films, performances, symposia, gallery talks, and more.
Gabrielle Wyrick comes to NOMA from the Institute of Contemporary Art/Boston, where she served as Associate Director of Education from 2010 to September 2018. In this role, Wyrick was responsible for identifying, developing, implementing and evaluating all educational programs for youth including teen programs, school programs, and family programs. She also served as Project Director for the National Convening for Teens in the Arts at ICA/Boston since its inception in 2010. Before her current position, Wyrick held the position of Curator of Education at the Museum of Contemporary Art San Diego for four years, where she oversaw all interpretive and education activities.
Wyrick received an M.A. in Art History from Tufts University, and a B.A. in Art History and Criticism from the University of California, San Diego. She has contributed to Teen Convening Education Reports, ICA/Boston, and Journal of Museum Education. Additionally, Wyrick served as an adjunct faculty member in the Department of World Languages and Cultural Studies at Suffolk University, and the Division of Integrated Studies at Lesley University. She has been a guest lecturer at the Harvard Graduate School of Education and Tufts University, and served as a Capstone Advisor in Museum Studies at Harvard University.
