NEW YORK, NY.- The Museum of Modern Art presents Architects of Liberation: Modernism in Western Africa, the first major exhibition to examine modern architecture from the late 1950s through the early 1980s in the context of political independence in the region. On view from July 5, 2026, through January 2, 2027, in the The Robert B. Menschel Galleries on the Museum’s third floor, the exhibition highlights the independence period as a prolific time of architectural production, during which leaders of newly founded African nations sought to redefine themselves and their countries in contrast to colonial rule. This new architectural identity engaged deeply with broader political ideas of Pan-Africanism and Africanization, which were promoted by new leaders and governments. Spanning seven countries—Benin, Cameroon, Côte d’Ivoire, Ghana, Nigeria, Senegal, and Togo—the show has been organized around anchor projects that serve as entry points into categories such as cityscapes, education ... MADRID.- The Museo Nacional del Prado is presenting for the first time in its galleries The Procession of Giants in Brussels on 31 May 1615, a historically significant painting by the Flemish artist David Noveliers. The work, painted in Brussels in 1616 and acquired by Spain’s Ministry of Culture in 2024, is now on view in Room 80 alongside three other canvases from the same remarkable series. The painting belongs to an exceptional group originally commissioned by Archduchess Isabella Clara Eugenia and Archduke Albert of Austria, rulers of the Southern Netherlands on behalf of the Spanish Monarchy. The series recorded the festivities held in Brussels in May 1615, celebrations in which the couple themselves took part. With this new presentation, the Prado now brings together four of the six surviving paintings from what was once a set of eight large canvases. Two others are held by the Victoria and ... More

Ice Cold. A Hip-Hop Jewelry History. 45th Ed. Hardcover, 6.1 x 8.5 in., 2.21 lb, 460 pages ISBN 978-3-7544-0127-9

NEW YORK, NY.- Whether it's diamond-encrusted grills, oversized “truck” style chains, bust-down Rolex and Patek Philippe watches or a Tiffany necklace, jewelry is a cornerstone of hip-hop culture. Glittering, blinged-out jewels are the shining statement of a collective identity: unapologetic, charismatic, and street savvy. Spanning the history of hip-hop jewelry, from the 1980s to today, Ice Cold: A Hip-Hop Jewelry History is a stunning compilation of storytelling and visuals. Hundreds of extraordinary images of every major hip-hop artist on record celebrate how “Ice” has become a proclamation of identity and self-expression. Starting with Run-DMC’s gold Adidas pendants and Eric B. & Rakim’s ostentatious dookie rope chains and Mercedes medallions, the jewelry then transforms from street style into a booming design culture. The hip-hop tradition of “show up and show out” reaches new heights with artists like Pharrell Williams, Jay-Z, Gucci Mane, ... More

MADRID.- The Museo Nacional del Prado is opening a new chapter in its ongoing research into the role of women in art history with the launch of Women Creators of the Prado, a publishing series that will explore the lives and legacies of women who helped shape the museum’s collections. The new series, presented under the framework of the Prado’s long-running project “The Prado in Feminine,” begins with a volume dedicated to Christina of Sweden, one of the most fascinating figures of Baroque Europe. The publication coincides with the 400th anniversary of her birth and highlights her decisive role in the formation of the Prado’s classical sculpture collection. Directed by art historian Noelia García Pérez, who also leads “The Prado in Feminine,” and Carlos G. Navarro, the museum’s curator of 19th-century painting, the series will eventually include fifteen volumes. Each book will focus on a woman whose work, patronage, collecting, ... More

Exhibition view „Monet on the Normandy Coast. The Discovery of Étretat“.

FRANKFURT.- With over a quarter of a million visitors (252,148), the major highlight exhibition “Monet on the Normandy Coast. The Discovery of Étretat” came to a successful close yesterday. This makes the exhibition, following “Making van Gogh. A German Love Story” (2019/20), the most successful Städel exhibition of the past ten years and one of the five most-visited exhibitions in the history of the Städel Museum. With “Monet on the Normandy Coast”, open from 19 March until 5 July, the Städel Museum explored the artistic discovery of Étretat. The former fishing village on the Normandy coast had a significant influence on modern painting: its impressive cliff landscape captivated numerous artists in the 19th century. Depictions of the coast by artists including Claude Monet, Gustave Courbet, Eugène Delacroix and Henri Matisse made this remote place famous beyond the borders of France. The exhibition brought together around 170 outstanding paintings, drawings, photogra ... More

LONDON.- In 1506, when the legendary ancient marble sculpture of Laocoön and his sons was unearthed in Rome, crowds gathered to admire this ‘singular miracle of art’. Tonight at Sotheby’s, a rare early bronze cast of that same sculpture generated similar excitement. The first lot in an evening that totalled £51.3m / $68m (est. £32.1-46.4m), the Hamilton Laocoön was pursued by four determined bidders over the course of fifteen minutes. Among them was a private collector from Asia and a Contemporary collector who had never before bid in this field, represented on the phone by Sotheby's Chairman of Modern & Contemporary Art, Alex Branczik. Together, the four contenders took the final price to £13.6m / $18.1m (est. £2-3 million) - the second highest price for any pre-Modern sculpture sold at auction and the highest price ever paid for a Neoclassical sculpture at auction. “This evening’s results represent a resounding endorsement of the power of Old Masters to captivate coll ... Many of the artifacts originate from Blackwood Hall, the longtime home of Colonel and Claudia Sanders, where the couple lived for approximately 25 years. Franchise owners from around the world traveled to Shelbyville to learn directly from Sanders, often gathering at Blackwood Hall to study the cooking techniques, hospitality standards, and business practices that helped build one of the world's most recognizable restaurant brands. The artifacts have been preserved by the Settle family, who purchased both Blackwood Hall and the Claudia Sanders Dinner House directly from Colonel and Claudia Sanders in 1974. That uninterrupted chain of ownership makes the collection exceptionally rare and provides a level of provenance seldom availabl ... More

Filmmaker Verena Paravel debuts major new moving-image commission 'Delta'
ARLES.- Delta is a major new film commission by artist and filmmaker Verena Paravel, developed as part of her wider research project Cosmofonia. One of the most distinctive voices in contemporary documentary cinema, Paravel has consistently expanded the possibilities of film by testing the limits of perception and challenging human-centered ways of seeing. Situated at the intersection of anthropology, ecology, and the moving image, her practice proposes a decentered approach to the living world, attentive to interspecies relations, unstable environments, and forms of presence that exceed human measure. Filmed in the Rhône River delta, Delta is the second part of the prelude to Cosmofonia, an ongoing film and sound project that shifts attention from a point of view to a point of hearing. Here, Paravel turns toward the inaudible sounds of the Earth: ... More

Ellen Gallagher designs 42nd London pocket Tube map cover for Art on the Underground
LONDON.- Art on the Underground presents the 42nd pocket Tube map cover, Fast-Fish and Loose-Fish, by internationally renowned artist Ellen Gallagher. Gallagher is known for creating multi-layered works that explore literature, mythology, racial identity, stereotypes and oceanic themes. For this new commission, she combines these interests with references to London's maritime past and the hidden histories beneath the city. Fast-Fish and Loose-Fish expands on Gallagher's interest in colonial geographies and maritime mythology. Inspired by Herman Melville's novel Moby-Dick and drawing parallels with whaling and triangular trades, Fast-Fish and Loose-Fish references Melville's story of Pip, a young black cabin boy who falls overboard. Gallagher imagines the underwater world Pip experiences, the skeletal form of a whale lying on the seabed forms the central ... More

'Pocket-sized Power: A Feminist History of Portrait Miniatures' online now
BIRMINGHAM.- The intricate world of portrait miniatures is re-examined in Pocket-sized Power: A Feminist History of Portrait Miniatures, a new online exhibition, devised in partnership with Victoria and Albert Museum, London (V&A), that places women at the centre of artistic production, patronage and representation. Bringing together works from the V&A, the Barber Institute of Fine Arts, and private collections, the exhibition spans more than 400 years of the portrait miniature. It challenges the longstanding perception of miniatures as less-important artworks, revealing instead their powerful role in networks of gender, class, empire and artistic labour. Small, yet highly significant, portrait miniatures functioned as jewellery, keepsakes, diplomatic gifts and symbols of status. Intimate and portable, they conveyed identity, memory and influence across social ... More

New Swiss showcase unites two decades of memories and graphic archives from John M Armleder
BIEL/BIENNE.- An artist who defies categorisation, John M Armleder (*1948) has spent the last sixty years drifting between artistic movements, practices and media. With a background in performance art and Fluxus, he is also a leading figure in the Neo Geo movement. His art is characterised in particular by a constant questioning of the expectations of art, both in terms of its value and its presentation. «Le fantôme de la chance» takes as its starting point two memories, two exhibitions held twenty years ago that left a lasting mark on the Swiss art scene. In 2004, the exhibition «About Nothing» (Kunsthalle Zürich), which presented some 500 works on paper in a particularly dense installation. In 2006, the exhibition «Amor vacui, horror vacui» (MAMCO Geneva), the artist’s first major retrospective, which spanned the institution’s 30 rooms and four floors. Both an art centre ... More
