MEXICO CITY.- A Mesoamerican stone mask that left Mexico decades ago and eventually surfaced in Japan is set to return home following its voluntary restitution by a Japanese collector. The anthropomorphic mask, believed to date to the Late Preclassic period, roughly 700 to 230 BC, was handed over to the Mexican Embassy in Japan on September 10, 2026. Mexican officials say it is the first archaeological object to be restituted to the country from Japan. According to a preliminary assessment by Mexico’s National Institute of Anthropology and History, or INAH, the mask was likely made in the northern part of what is now the state of Guerrero. Its style and manufacturing technique point to a Mesoamerican origin, although specialists say a more detailed examination will take place once the object arrives in Mexico. NEW YORK, NY.- At first glance, there is nothing particularly remarkable about this meal. A loaf of crusty bread has been cut open. A diced herring sits on a bright red plate alongside butter, pork, a couple of onions and a glass of beer. It is a simple meal, but there is something familiar about it. It feels as though someone has just stepped away from the table and might return at any moment. Painted in the first half of the seventeenth century by the artist known only as P. v. Plas, Peasant Breakfast belongs to a tradition of still lifes known as ontbijtjes, or breakfast pieces. There is no silver or fine porcelain here. The brown bread tells us this is a modest table, but that does not make it any less beautiful. The artist seems to delight in the everyday: the silvery skin of the herring, the thick crust of the bread, the creamy butter and the flashes of brilliant red. COLOGNE.- To mark its 50th anniversary, the Museum Ludwig is staging a major interdisciplinary survey exhibition that explores the connections between the art of the international Black diaspora and European modernism. The exhibition features modernist and contemporary works by artists of the Black diaspora through a host of international loans that are presented in dialogue with pieces from the Museum Ludwig collection. These works include paintings, sculptures, drawings, literature, and music, highlighting the diversity of artistic expression that served as a platform for cultural exchange and engagement at the beginning of the twentieth century. The Blaquier-Arrieta Collection comprises 12 works and is expected to realize around $450 million.
