EDINBURGH.- National Museums Scotland is launching a public call out for personal stories and garments by Jean Muir, Bill Gibb and Zandra Rhodes. A major new exhibition, A Fashion Odyssey (1 Jul – 12 Nov 2028), will explore the work of these trailblazing British designers in the centenary year of Muir’s birth. It is hoped the public can help locate treasured garments by these designers and share memories and photographs from those who wore and loved their clothes. TLAXCALA, MEXICO.- More than 15 years of monitoring at the Cacaxtla Archaeological Zone have found no significant deterioration in the site’s celebrated pre-Hispanic mural paintings, according to Mexico’s National Institute of Anthropology and History (INAH). The ongoing conservation program focuses on the 16 murals of Cacaxtla’s Great Platform, including some of the archaeological site’s best-known compositions: The Battle, Bird and Jaguar Warriors, Red Temple and Temple of Venus. The paintings are attributed to the Olmeca-Xicalanca culture and date to the Mesoamerican Epiclassic period, between approximately 650 and 900 CE. SALZBURG.- With the motif of the pistol in The Uselessness of Defense, Matthias Noggler addresses an almost overdetermined subject: a tangible symbol of violence and power, but also a popular cultural trope in films and video games. We are well acquainted with pistols through media imagery and are also familiar with their toy versions. Even though they are standardized industrial products, their function as potential instruments of killing is always present. In his series of large-scale paintings, however, Noggler depicts the pistol—so striking in its symbolic clarity—in various states of deformation. Through repeated variation, the violent connotations of the motif are gradually neutralized. Schematically abstracted, larger than life, and more grotesque than monstrous, the weapon is reduced to only a few defining features—cylinder, barrel, grip. Chaïm Soutine (13 January 1893 - 9 August 1943) was a French painter of Belarusian-Jewish origin of the School of Paris, who made a major contribution to the Expressionist movement while living and working in Paris. Inspired by classic painting in the European tradition, exemplified by the works of Rembrandt, Chardin and Courbet, Soutine developed an individual style more concerned with shape, color, and texture than representation, which served as a bridge between more traditional approaches and the developing form of Abstract Expressionism.
