NEWPORT, RI.- The Redwood Library & Athenaeum has opened Robert Duncanson: Landscapes to Freedom, the first exhibition to place Duncanson’s paintings in the context of his involvement in abolitionist politics and the Underground Railroad. On view through January 2027 at the Redwood—the sole venue—the exhibition comprises twenty-eight paintings and numerous site photographs from the collection of Michael Meyer, the acknowledged authority on the artist. The exhibition documents Duncanson’s travels to, and painting of, Southern and Northeastern locations, illuminating the artist’s project of narrativizing a geography of escape nested within the pathways of the Underground Railroad. NEW YORK, NY.- The Museum of Modern Art announces It’s Alive! A Century of Animation from the Collection, an expansive exhibition featuring the work that more than 35 artists and filmmakers—working largely in New York—produced in the 100 years prior to digital technology’s transformation of the medium. Opening August 1, 2026, the exhibition will bring together over 200 pieces of production art and films from the Museum’s collection created between 1908 and 2020 by such artists as Jane Aaron, John Canemaker, Sally Cruikshank, Tissa David, Jerome Hill, Candy Kugel, Emily and Faith Hubley, David Ehrlich, George Griffin, Jeff Scher, and Michael Sporn. VENICE.- Save Venice announced the completion of the conservation of the majestic 15th-century Funerary Monument to Doge Francesco Foscari in the Basilica of Santa Maria Gloriosa dei Frari.
When, on November 4, 1457, Francesco Foscari’s dead body was carried across Venice under a canopy of cloth gold, the whole city came out to see the spectacle. Foscari had been deposed just a few days before, on 22 October 1457, but his sudden illness and death had aroused wide public sympathy. On that cold, Winter morning, the new doge Pasquale Malipiero with the Signoria, the clergy, the scuole grandi, the nobles, and the citizens of Venice, lined up to escort Foscari on his last journey to the Basilica of Santa Maria Gloriosa dei Frari. After the funeral oration by historian Bernardo Giustinian, the remains were inhumed in the church. TRINCHERAS, SONORA.- Five of Mexico’s most significant ancient manuscripts have traveled north—at least in facsimile form—for a new exhibition at the Cerro de Trincheras Archaeological Zone in Sonora. Organized by Mexico’s National Institute of Anthropology and History (INAH), Codices of Mexico is now on view at the site’s Visitor Center, where it will remain through November 8, 2026. Admission is free. The traveling exhibition brings together reproductions of the Codex Mendoza, the Tonalámatl de Aubin, the Boturini Codex, the De la Cruz-Badiano Codex, and the Dresden Codex. GUERRERO.- Archaeologists working in the Costa Grande region of Guerrero have documented two settlements that remained inhabited for decades after the Spanish conquest, offering new evidence about how Indigenous communities navigated the turbulent transition from the pre-Hispanic world to colonial rule. The sites, identified as Camutla and Sacualpan, are mentioned in 16th-century historical sources and appear to have survived until the closing decades of that century. Their archaeological remains may help researchers better understand how communities in western Guerrero reorganized, adapted, and ultimately disappeared during the first generations of Spanish colonization. The discoveries were made by specialists from Mexico’s National Institute of Anthropology and History (INAH) during an inspection connected to infrastructure projects included in the Michoacán Plan for Peace and Justice. Titled What Is Love, the exhibition traces Jackson’s lifelong devotion to beauty as a political force. She began showing her work in the late 1960s, an era when Black artists in the United States were often pressed to make figurative work with a clear political message. Together, the acquisitions enhance the Library’s significant collections documenting the evolution of graphic storytelling, visual journalism and contemporary American life. Created by Swiss artist Niele Toroni in 1988, the large-scale mural stretches across the open arcade on the façade of the former railway station. Although its repeated marks may appear simple from a distance, the work is closely tied to a decisive moment in Berlin’s cultural and political history. Norway's new National 22 July Memorial in Oslo opens OSLO.- Norway inaugurated its new National 22 July Memorial in central Oslo on Sunday, July 19, creating a permanent place of remembrance for the 77 people killed in the 2011 terrorist attacks and for the survivors, families and communities whose lives were permanently changed. The memorial, titled Upholding, was created by Norwegian artist and writer Matias Faldbakken and now stands at Johan Nygaardsvolds plass in the newly reconstructed Government Quarter.
