Fontana was one of the most successful Italian painters working in the late 16th and early 17th centuries and is considered one of the first professional woman painters. The painting is an altarpiece depicting the mystical marriage of Saint Catherine of Alexandria. The altarpiece by the Italian artist Lavinia Fontana has belonged to an Italian private collection since the late nineteenth century and has therefore previously been unknown to the art world. The work was painted in 1607 and is remarkable for the exceptional quality that Fontana, at the height of her career, achieved through her complete mastery of form and colour. Dating to the late 17th-century renovations of the church, the chapel stands as a testament to female artistic patronage. It was commissioned by the Compagnia delle Nobildonne Devote a Sant'Anna, a lay confraternity of Venetian noblewomen dedicated to Saint Anne, the mother of the Virgin Mary. Its dazzling ensemble of colored marbles and magnificent sculptures and reliefs ranks among the finest examples of the Venetian Baroque. At the heart of the exhibition is the 1969 film of the same name, complemented by large-format film stills. Created in what was then West Berlin, the work reflects an early period in the artist’s practice and a historical moment of concentrated political, social, and aesthetic upheaval. Notably, Life–Death was shown at documenta 5 in Kassel in 1972—an early marker of its art-historical significance. Within Sieverding’s filmic output, Life–Death holds a singular position. Matt Copson illuminates Fridericianum facade for Kassel Museum Night KASSEL.- British artist Matt Copson has designed the site-specific work Flowers (2026) specially for this year's Kassel Museum Night. The temporary intervention consists of eight colorful laser projections illuminating the entire exterior facade of the Fridericianum. Using projectors typically found in clubs and stage productions, animated flowers bloom, wilt, and dissolve into abstraction in a constant loop. Together, their amorphous forms transform the building into an artificial landscape as the lasers continuously redraw lines of light through the darkness.
