NEW YORK, NY.- David Zwirner announced the passing of Yayoi Kusama. The artist passed away from multiple organ failure at a hospital in Tokyo on August 14, 2026, at the age of 97. Kusama devoted her life to an international career as an avant-garde artist, working primarily in the visual arts while also extending her practice to performance, novels, poetry, and other forms of expression. She continued to paint until shortly before her passing, never setting aside her brush, and remained steadfast in her lifelong belief that love can save the world. MONTERREY.- The Museo de Arte Contemporneo de Monterrey (MARCO) has appointed curator and art critic Sofa Hernndez Chong Cuy as its new Yolanda Santos de Hoyos Curator-at-Large, a newly created position that the museum says is the first of its kind in Mexico. The appointment, announced on August 25, marks a significant step in MARCO’s efforts to rethink how its permanent collection can be presented and interpreted, particularly in relation to the cultural complexity of northern Mexico and its connections across the U.S.-Mexico border. COSTA MESA, CA.- Stack’s Bowers Galleries, the oldest and most accomplished numismatic auction house, will be auctioning off a dime so rare that it made its future co-chairman a national celebrity when he was only 19. Rarities like the 1894-S dime, an American classic, have layers of desirability. Some collectors are most attracted to a tiny population, some to an elite reputation, some to an oft-recited history. Only 24 examples were struck with a net mintage of just 21 coins after three were assayed and only nine specimens are positively confirmed to still exist. Market appearances are usually few and far between, as 1894-S dimes have traditionally spent years, if not decades, in tightly held collections. Since 2005, only five 1894-S dimes have been sold at auction, ranging from $1.3 million to $2.16 million. This particular example has an estimated value of $1.5 million. NEW ORLEANS, LA.- The New Orleans Museum of Art (NOMA) announced today that the Besthoff family has gifted a monumental work by sculptor Isamu Noguchi. Titled Mississippi Fountain (also known as The Mississippi), the work was created for what has long been known as K&B Plaza. Designed by architect Gordon Bunshaft for Skidmore, Owings, and Merrill and built in 1961–62, the building is one of New Orleans’s most prominent examples of midcentury modern architecture. Mississippi Fountain is Noguchi’s poetic distillation of the river as a symbol of a vast American landscape, of its elemental power, and of relationships between earth, water, movement, and culture. August 27, 1890. Man Ray (born Emmanuel Radnitzky; August 27, 1890 - November 18, 1976) was an American-born, French-naturalized visual artist who spent most of his career in Paris. He was a significant contributor to the Dada and Surrealist movements, although his ties to each were informal. He produced major works in a variety of media but considered himself a painter above all. He was a photography innovator as well as a fashion and portrait photographer, and is noted for his work with photograms, which he called "rayographs" in reference to himself.
