SYRACUSE, NY.- The
Everson Museum of Art is pleased to announce it will host the work of renowned Spanish sculptor, Carles Vives. The selections of ceramic sculptures will be on exhibition from February 7 April 26, 2009. These ceramic sculptures were created during the time which Vives was a visiting artist at Onondaga Community College .
Carles Vives extraordinary sculptures capture the beauty of nature in combination with the human impact on the environment, said Debora Ryan, Everson Museum of Art Senior Curator. We are proud to display Vives creative work which was inspired by the Central New York winter landscape.
Vives began his career as an apprentice to a Spanish folk potter from Andalucía , Spain , where he learned to create pieces using a traditional Moorish-style kiln. In the 1980s, Vives studied under the master ceramist Antonio Cumella, in the town of Canovelles . It was during this time when Vives became sensitive to the environment which surrounded him. The Spanish country which he knew so well was drastically transitioning to high-rises which outlined a future city. These changes impacted his current style of sculpting where he constructs forms from materials that humans leave behind such as cardboard boxes and Styrofoam packing materials.
In February 2008, when Vives arrived in Syracuse , the winter was a new inspiration. Immediately Vives began creating extraordinary sculptures where he collaborated with students and colleagues of Onondaga Community College . Vives could express his thoughts and feelings, beyond the language barrier, through abstract, architectural sculptures full of texture and earth tones.
