COVENTRY.- Over 100 people attended the grand launch of a major new international exhibition at Coventrys
Herbert Art Gallery and Museum .
A collection of drawings, paintings, sculptures, photographs and films are on display as part of Through Other Eyes: Contemporary Art from South Asia. The exhibition is now open to the public at the venue in Jordan Well in the city centre until April 19 and is the first time that any of the works have been seen outside of India and Pakistan.
About 140 pieces of work were selected by curator Gérard Mermoz during a three-month visit to art schools, artist studios, artist-led galleries and group exhibitions in India and Pakistan instead of selecting pieces already looked at by commercial galleries.
The exhibition includes new work by folk and tribal artists alongside pieces by artists who have been trained at art schools.
Rosie Addenbrooke, Senior Exhibitions and Events Officer at The Herbert, said this was a pioneering international exhibition which was making its debut in the city.
This is a fascinating exhibition with a wide range of different mediums used by artists who havent exhibited their work in their own countries, she said.
Although none of the work has been divided into sections, one aspect they have in common is that they all deal with human issues. We were delighted with the response from those who attended the launch evening and we hope as many other people as possible will come along to have a look for themselves over the next few months.
The exhibition features a massive free events, activities and workshops programme that brings the very best of South Asian dance, comedy, crafts, films and entertainment to the Herbert Art Gallery and Museum for members of the public to experience.
The exhibition is also completely free to attend and was supported by the National Lottery through Arts Council England.
