Renowned composer Jinwei Sun recently captivated her peers in the composition major at the University of Wisconsin-Madison with an enlightening lecture on her latest masterpiece, "Sonic Pleats." This orchestral work seamlessly merges fabric technology with music, resulting in a profound dialogue between science and art.

Dr. Sun's musical journey commenced at the age of five when she first acquainted herself with the piano. Her educational odyssey traversed prestigious institutions such as the Central Conservatory of Music and the San Francisco Conservatory of Music before culminating in a DMA in Composition from the University of California, Santa Cruz (UCSC). Currently serving as the resident composer for NCYO, Jinwei Sun's extensive exposure to diverse musical cultures from both East and West enriches her compositions with a profound cultural depth.

The idea of Sonic Pleats was sparked by the iconic fabric "Pleats Please" by Japanese designer Issey Miyake. Jinwei Sun was enamored by the fabric's sharp pleats reminiscent of knife edges and its delicate lightness akin to gentle waves, evoking emotions of romance and tenderness. Inspired by the fabric's inherent personality and symbolism of freedom, Jinwei Sun embarked on a creative journey, birthing three distinct works: Percussion Trio, Progression, and the titular Sonic Pleats.

With the Percussion Trio performed by the Grammy-nominated percussionist William Winant and the premiere of Progression in Chicago with Dal Niente, Sonic Pleats made its China premiere with the Sichuan Symphony Orchestra to fervent anticipation and resounding applause. Dr. Sun's innate curiosity and her ability to draw inspiration from the mundane manifest in her innovative compositions, transcending cultural boundaries and resonating with audiences worldwide.
