ALL YOU NEED TO KNOW ABOUT EYELID SURGERY

Eyes are the window of the soul. Signs of ageing impacts eyes the first. The appearance of wrinkles, fine lines, crow’s feet and sagging and puffy eyebags can change the way one looks. It can make one look tired and older than they are. Many people suffer from the existence of perpetual eyebags which don’t go away even after sleeping. This could be due to genetics, age or environmental factors. Blepharoplasty or eyelid surgery can help to rejuvenate the eyes. You can choose to undergo upper or lower eyelid blepharoplasty Toronto or both to achieve the aesthetic goals. Here is all that you need to know about eyelid surgery.

How is Blepharoplasty performed?
For blepharoplasty, the patient is put under general anaesthesia. The procedure is designed keeping the anatomy and aesthetic goals in mind. There are different techniques for upper and lower blepharoplasty. This is how the surgery is performed.
Upper eyelid Blepharoplasty: The surgeon makes an incision in the eyelid crease or closer to the lower lash line. Incisions are well-hidden. After that, the surgeon very carefully removes the required amount of tissue which can smoothen and re-contour the eyelids. If required a small amount of fat might be removed or repositioned.

Lower eyelid Blepharoplasty: Two techniques are often used. The usage of the technique is dependent on the concern being targeted. When the undereye bags are present, the transconjunctival approach is used. The fat is removed through the incision that is made inside the eyelid. There is no visible scarring and the eyelid becomes smooth. For targeting fine lines, the subciliary approach is used. A thin incision is made closer to the lower eyelashes. The skin is trimmed away and puffiness is reduced. With time, the incisions also become almost invisible.

What does recovery look like?
Once you’ve woken up from the surgery and feel up to it, you can return home with a friend or a family member. Before leaving, you will be prescribed antibiotics, eye drops and pain medication. You will also be provided with a list of instructions you need to follow. It is recommended to take about a week off from your routine. The sutures are removed after 5 days. After the surgery, you might experience swelling and bruising. Ensure that you keep the head and shoulders elevated and avoid bending over. This can help with bruising and swelling. After a week, most swelling would’ve resolved.

What are the side effects and risks associated with Blepharoplasty?
Before undergoing the surgery, the surgeon will walk you through all the possible side effects and risks associated with blepharoplasty. You might experience temporarily blurred vision after the surgery. There could be mild to moderate discomfort, swelling, redness and a tightness sensation. These should settle in about a week. The other possible risks that are present are those associated with anaesthesia. You will be informed about them in detail during the consultation process. Blepharoplasty is a fairly safe surgery.
