Tips for Painting Landscapes: How to Paint a Mountain

Nature is a very popular theme among artists. Mountains, sea, forests... Any landscape is ideal for making beautiful paintings. Many people love to walk on the beach, in the mountains, by a lake or by the sea. So why don't you set up your easel and paint a picture? The landscape painter Marvin Jemal regularly writes articles where he shares some tips for painting landscapes.

Painting Mountains is Very Relaxing

In Jemal’s opinion, mountain landscapes are the most impressive among all the landscapes that can be painted.

“I find painting mountains very relaxing,” says the talented artist. “The peaceful atmosphere of the peaks gently calms me”.

Tips for Painting Mountains

Jemal points out that it is not necessary to go to the Himalayas to paint the most beautiful mountains. Many artists choose to paint from photos. This is a very practical approach, since photos can be found everywhere: on the Internet, in magazines or in books.

However, there is no doubt that the best is to go out and involve yourself deeply in the nature to paint the landscape that you have in front of your eyes.

You can take a vacation to go to the mountains, or enroll in a course in naturalistic painting. The advantage of taking a course in naturalistic painting is that these courses are usually organized in groups guided by a professional draftsman.

Jemal’s Techniques for Painting Mountains

According to Jemal, any painting technique can be used to paint mountains and depends on the final representation that the artist wants to give to the masterpiece.

Some artists prefer to paint with graphite, while others, including Jemal, prefer oil paint.

If you choose to go on a mountain excursion, Jemal suggests keeping in mind that it may be difficult to carry a canvas and an easel to paint the landscape.

Most traveling artists decide to use watercolor for their artworks. According to Jemal, this is convenient because there are small transportable pallets and brushes with a water tank that avoid you the hassle of taking a jar of water with you.

“There are no rules. You can use whatever painting technique you prefer, including pastels, charcoal, wash, etc.,” says the talented painter.

Steps for Painting a Mountain

Landscape painter Marvin Jemal shares his process of painting a mountain.

“First of all, I begin to sketch the mountain with a graphite pencil and an eraser,” shares the painter.

In this first phase of painting the general outlines are painting the shapes of the mountains.

“Then I highlight the mountains,” Marvin Jemal shares further. “If I do not want to create a colored painting, I do it with shading or by coloring the shadow areas of the mountains with graphite pencils. In the case that I decide to color the painting, I use different colors to darken the deeper areas of the mountains”.

Conclusion

Now that you have learned more about the process of painting a mountain, why don’t you get your equipment and go on a vacation in the mountains to enjoy the views and record them on your canvas?

The technique and the medium that can be used are a question of a personal choice. Marvin Jemal suggests exploring different mediums and techniques, to find out which best suit your needs.
