ABILENE, TX.- A new show at
Jody Klotz Fine Art ties into the major Milton Avery exhibition currently on view at the Modern Art Museum of Ft. Worth. Avery was an iconic and influential figure among 20th century American Modernist painters, and his innovations as a colorist were unparalleled. However, Miltons contributions were not made entirely independently. Jody Klotz Fine Arts exhibition, entitled Avery | A Family Legacy, features works by Milton, as well as his wife Sally Michel and their daughter March Avery.
Sally Michel was a young art student in the 1920s when she met Milton Avery. They often painted together and developed their unique style in tandem; a style which March would continue in her own career as an artist. These two exceptionally talented artists have begun to garner the recognition that their work merits as the art world focuses on the re-examination of the contributions of women that were often overlooked and marginalized by womens roles in society.
The Avery Style has become a term used by art historians and professionals to describe the unique voice that all three members of the Avery family brought to the art world. Their style focuses on color, and they abandoned the creation of dimension that characterizes more traditional painting styles in favor of allowing the juxtaposition of unique color combinations to be the driving force of their painting.
This exhibition at Jody Klotz Fine Art, concurrent with the exhibition at the Ft. Worth Modern, allows art lovers from both Abilene and the Metroplex to experience Milton Avery in the context of his family and to be introduced more to Sally Michel and March Avery, both of whose work is highly collected in the art market. These women contributed to the development of a style that would shape future generations of artists.
Jody Klotz Fine Art, in downtown Abilene, offers European and American Art from the 19th through 21st centuries and is open Monday through Friday from 8:30am 5:30pm.
