How to Get the Most Out of Your Online Classical Guitar Lessons

Whether you are keen on becoming a solo performer or you're a music enthusiast who wants to connect with your passion on a deeper level, there's no better time to learn classical guitar than now.

In the past, when you wanted to learn how to play the classical guitar, your only option was to enrol in a class for face-to-face instruction with a teacher. Today, you have several online resources, from online forums and platforms like YouTube, where you can gain access to tips, tricks, and other information that help you become a better classical guitar player.

But when it comes to mastering the classical guitar, nothing beats getting instruction from a qualified and experienced teacher. The aforementioned resources may provide you with helpful tips, but formal education in the classical guitar can provide you with so much more.

Chief of the benefits of enrolling in classical guitar lessons is that you'll be able to learn in a structured manner, enabling you to make linear progression. Sure, you can watch videos on YouTube and pick up a few useful tricks. But the tradeoff is that you'll have to figure out things by yourself. Worse, you might pick up bad habits that can hold back your progress.

If you want to learn classical guitar online, here are a few tips to help get you the most out of each session with your instructor.

Choose the right teacher
Learning classical guitar online can be a bit different compared to face-to-face lessons. As such, you'd want an instructor who has experience teaching classical guitar online.

To help you find the right instructor, you should strongly consider enrolling in trial lessons. This will give you a better feel for the teacher that best suits your needs and goals.

You should also check out reviews from past students. Reviews from past and current classical guitar students can give you an insight into the instructor's teaching style as well as an overall look at his course material.

Determine your goals
Before enrolling in a classical guitar course online, it is a good idea to determine goals that you should strive for.

It can be as simple as learning a few musical pieces or something bigger, like performing in front of an audience as a soloist.

Having clear goals also benefits your online classical guitar instructor as these will help him finetune his instructions.

The great thing about setting goals for yourself is that you can set the bar higher or lower, depending on your progression as a classical guitar player.

Set aside time for practice
Your classical guitar instructor can provide you with invaluable knowledge and skills culled from his years of experience both as a guitar player and instructor.

But these mean nothing if you do not set aside time for individual practice. Simply put, you can't progress much as a classical guitar player if you play your instrument only during your sessions with your teacher.

Setting aside time for practice can be a bit tricky if you are working or studying. But that also makes your progress sweeter, knowing that you put time and effort into mastering the classical guitar.

Often, that can mean setting aside things that you like. But if you set clear goals for yourself, making sacrifices gets easier.

Trust your instructor
Sometimes, classical guitar instructors may give you lessons or drills that might not resonate with you.

Perhaps, he has given you a drill or musical piece that may seem too simple for you, given your experience as a classical guitar player.

In such instances, give your full trust to your classical guitar instructor. Maybe he's trying to develop a particular skill, or perhaps he's trying to gauge your skill level.

A good classical guitar teacher will have your best interests in mind, although that may not be readily apparent. If you are unsure, ask your teacher directly to understand his intentions better.

Create a space for your classical guitar online classes
You don't need to spend thousands of dollars to get started with learning how to play the classical guitar. However, there are a few essential investments that you should consider making if you are serious about taking classical guitar lessons online.

Practice space
One great thing about taking classical guitar lessons online is that you can learn from practically anywhere in your home. But if you are keen on getting as much as you possibly can from your online classical guitar lessons, finding a space devoted to that task is a good idea.

Ideally, that space should be enough for you and your equipment. It helps if you set up your practice space in an area in your home that is relatively quiet and distraction-free, allowing you to focus your attention on your practice and lessons.

Camera
With acoustic and classical guitars, you do not need to invest much in equipment like amplifiers. However, you might want to invest in a two-camera setup for your classical guitar lessons online.

The first camera is set up to capture you playing the classical guitar from the front. A smartphone or laptop is more than enough for this task.

As for the other camera, you will need this to enable your instructor to see your fretting and picking hand close up. Again, you can use either a smartphone or laptop for this task.

Internet connection
Before enrolling in classical guitar lessons online, check your internet speed first. Ideally, your connection should have upload and download speeds of at least 4 Mbps. The last thing that you want is a lag that will prevent you from hearing and seeing your classical guitar instructor during your lessons.

Headphones
Headphones are another essential investment for your online classical guitar lessons.
Headphones offer a few advantages over speakers. For one, they allow you to hear your teacher better during your online classical guitar lessons. Second, these can block some of the unwanted sounds in the background.

If you can, invest in Bluetooth headphones or earbuds. The absence of wires prevents interference while playing your classical guitar.

Microphone
Although laptops are equipped with built-in microphones, getting a USB microphone for your classical guitar lessons online will pay great dividends later on.

For starters, your teacher can hear you better. Built-in microphones in laptops can't pick up the tone of your guitar and can hamper your classical guitar teacher from hearing your guitar playing at the optimal level.

Second, you can use your microphone to record yourself while playing your classical guitar.

Music stand
You'll need a music stand for your sheet music.

However, setting up your music stand is just as important as buying one. Ideally, you should position your stand close enough so you do not have to strain your neck and eyes while playing a musical piece.

Place your music stand near your dominant hand but not too close to the camera, obstructing your classical guitar instructor's view of your instrument.

Learn classical guitar now
Whether you want to be a soloist or just be a better guitar player, investing in one of the guitar courses you find online is a great way of reaching your goals.

But your classical guitar teacher can only provide you with just one side of the equation. You must also do your part to progress as a classical guitar player.
