BEIJING.- UCCA Center for Contemporary Art announced that Holly Roussell has joined as curator.

In her new role, Roussell will organize exhibitions in keeping with UCCA’s mission to situate contemporary art in China within the global discourse, as well as strategically contributing to the expansion of the museum’s international collaborations. UCCA Director Philip Tinari notes, “As a curator and museologist specializing in photography and Chinese contemporary art who has been based between Switzerland and China over the last decade, Roussell has actively worked to engage in meaningful collaborative relationships with artists from China and abroad at all career levels. We are thrilled to have her join our team.”

The role places Roussell in collaboration with UCCA’s curatorial team in Beijing and Shanghai, as well as with recently appointed curator-at-large Peter Eleey in New York. Roussell remarks, “I am very excited to join UCCA during this pivotal moment of the museum’s growth across three cities in China. I look forward to merging our shared commitment for the greater contextualization of Chinese contemporary art, and working with Tinari and the team across all venues to develop projects highlighting artists and their contributions to national and global art historical discourse.” She further comments, “It is my hope that my varied expertise in exhibition-making and my scholarly research in contemporary Chinese art history and international contemporary photography will complement existing strengths on the team. I hope to bring a fresh perspective to UCCA’s public offerings and to make contributions to knowledge in our field going forward.”

Holly Roussell (b. 1989, Vermont, USA) is a curator, museologist, and art historian specializing in photography and contemporary art from Asia. Roussell holds a Master’s degree in Museology and undergraduate degree in Art History. She previously served as coordinator of the worldwide travelling exhibitions program and photography prize, the Prix Elysée, for the Swiss photography museum, the Musée de l’Elysée from 2013-2017.

Since 2013, Roussell has worked as an independent curator organizing more than 20 group and solo exhibitions for festivals, biennale, and museums around the world such as: Folkwang Museum, DE; MUCEM, Marseille, FR; Les Rencontres d’Arles, FR; Somerset House, London, UK; NGV Melbourne, AUS; Lianzhou Photography Festival, CN; Shanghai Centre of Photography, CN; Auckland Art Gallery, NZ; Fotografiska, USA/SE; MMCA: Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art in Seoul, SK, and other venues. She has contributed as author to a number of exhibition catalogues, artist books, and international publications on photography. Presently, she is collaborating with Pixy Liao on the artist’s first museum solo exhibition at Fotografiska New York (2021) and Fotografiska Stockholm (2022). In 2022, Roussell will join the Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art in Seoul as International Curatorial Researcher in residence.
