LONDON.- Now in its eighth year, Mayfair Art Weekend is a three-day visual arts festival with special exhibitions, gallery tours and late openings, a sculpture trail, screenings, talks, artist open-studios and pop-up events all in the heart of global art world – London’s West End. Everything is free to attend.

A whole range artists, from Old to Modern Masters to the giants of the contemporary art world plus emerging artists, are represented in the 40 galleries involved in this annual celebration of art.

The Art of the Lockdown

One of the few events not to have skipped a year due to the lockdown, MAW has a unique offer in 2021 – 12 exhibitions of art made during and about the Covid-19 pandemic that we have all experienced. These shows include a pop-up exhibition 'There Are No Calories in Kisses' by Illuminate Productions in the shop window at 48 Brook Street, HYPNOS, a site-specific installation by seven artists at Grosvenor Chapel based on Freud’s theory of ‘derealisation’, a museum-scale exhibition of work about space by Italian artist Marco Tirelli, at Cardi Gallery, and an exhibition of the latest works by Shirazeh Houshairy entitled ‘Pneuma’ which reflect on our renewed interest in the natural world, at Lisson Gallery.

Modern Masters

The 20th century exhibitions are particularly strong this year. Highlights range from a rare selling exhibition of works on paper by Joan Miró at E&R Cyzer Gallery to Prunella Cough and Alan Reynolds at Annely Juda Fine Art, Sonia Delaunay at BASTIAN, the pop art of Peter Blake at Waddington Custot, ‘From Pop to Present’ a group show of leading pop artists and their contemporary counterparts at Clarendon Fine Art, modern masters at Luxembourg & Co in the group show ‘Lost in Italy’, the stars of conceptual artist James Lee Byars in ‘The Milky Way’ at Michael Werner Gallery, the anniversary exhibition ‘FIVE YEARS’ at Olivier Malingue, and tactile works by a range of modern and contemporary artists in a group show entitled ‘In Real Life’ at The Mayor Gallery.

Mayfair Art Weekend Programme highlights

MAW has a greatly expanded events programme this year to include: the second Mayfair Sculpture Trail, a Mayfair Art Weekend collaboration with Art in Mayfair with installations in the iconic public places and squares of Mayfair, the May Fair Showreel of moving image art at The May Fair hotel on Sunday 27 June; Access All Areas, a series of special events for 17 to 26 year olds interested in creative careers, developed in partnership with Cat Manson from Art Market Mentors and Leo Young from Good Nugget. The Woolwich Print Fair has a pop-up fair in South Molton Street throughout MAW2021.

The celebrated Gallery HOP! takes place on Friday 25 June where galleries stay open until 8pm. The full programme of talks and tours and gallery events can be seen here

‘Mayfair Art Weekend is a celebration of the diversity and resilience of the exceptional galleries in the district. After this recent period of mostly experiencing art online, Mayfair Art Weekend presents an opportunity to encounter art in real life through free events, exhibitions and talks.’ - Ewan Venters, Chief Executive Officer, Hauser & Wirth
