Abilene Art Gallery creates cultural synergy with Ft. Worth Modern Milton Avery exhibition

Jody Klotz Fine Art, in downtown Abilene, offers European and American Art from the 19th through 21st centuries and is open Monday through Friday from 8:30am – 5:30pm.

ABILENE, TX.- A new show at Jody Klotz Fine Art ties into the major Milton Avery exhibition currently on view at the Modern Art Museum of Ft. Worth. Avery was an iconic and influential figure among 20th century American Modernist painters, and his innovations as a colorist were unparalleled. However, Milton’s contributions were not made entirely independently. Jody Klotz Fine Art’s exhibition, entitled Avery | A Family Legacy, features works by Milton, as well as his wife Sally Michel and their daughter March Avery. Sally Michel was a young art student in the 1920s when she met Milton Avery. They often painted together and developed their unique style in tandem; a style which March would continue in her own career as an artist. These two exceptionally talented artists have begun to garner the recognition that their work merits as the art world focuses on the re-examination of the contributions of women that were often overlooked and ... Leonard Nimoy's Spock ears voyage home to National Air and Space Museum   Exquisite Charles II ebony longcase clock worth over £3 million at risk of leaving UK   Cinematic posterity for Jedi and Gollum

WASHINGTON, DC.- The Smithsonian’s National Air and Space Museum has recently accepted into its collection a set of prosthetic ears made for Leonard Nimoy as Mr. Spock in the original Star Trek television series. Donated to the museum by Nimoy’s children Adam and Julie Nimoy, the ears will go on display in the new "Kenneth C. Griffin Exploring the Planets Gallery" opening late next year. The pair of pointed, foam ear tips were made for the original Star Trek television series in the late 1960s. Leonard Nimoy brought the prosthetics home as a personal memento, where they were displayed by the family in a handmade black box beginning in 1969. “We’re delighted that the Nimoy family chose to donate these iconic artifacts to the Smithsonian, where visitors from around the world will be able to enjoy them and connect with Leonard Nimoy’s work,” ... The clock is the earliest surviving purpose-made longcase clock.

LONDON.- Valued at £3,009,000, an exquisite and rare Fromanteel longcase clock dating to 1660 is at risk of leaving the country unless a UK buyer can be found. The earliest surviving purpose-made longcase clock, the ebony-veneered piece is a fine example of the type of clock that was the bedrock of precise mechanical, scientific and domestic timekeeping from the late 17th century well into the 20th century. Despite restorations, the majority of the clock’s case is original and the piece is an excellent early example of the architectural form of longcase clock as it developed in this period. Ahasuerus Fromanteel, the clock’s maker, was the first to create pendulum clocks in England and gained the notice and patronage of Oliver Cromwell, during the Interregnum. Arts Minister Lord Parkinson of Whitley Bay said: The invention of the pendulum clock, the world’s most precise timekeeper, was a revelation in the 17th century and Fromanteel was the first ... “Star Wars: Episode VI — Return of the Jedi” (1983).

by Sarah Bahr

NEW YORK, NY.- It’s not just Gollum who thinks a certain ring is precious. The first in Peter Jackson’s epic trilogy of films based on J.R.R. Tolkien’s novels, “The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring” (2001), is among the motion pictures chosen for preservation this year on the Library of Congress’ National Film Registry. Also being added is the final installment of another beloved trilogy, “Star Wars: Episode VI — Return of the Jedi,” and the disarmingly sweet Pixar comedy “Wall-E.” On Tuesday, the library made its annual announcement that 25 more films, from 1902 to 2008, would be honored for their historical and cultural significance and added to the registry, helping to preserve them for future generations. The selection of “Return of the Jedi” (1983) is the culmination of a yearslong campaign by “Star Wars” fans to add the film to the registry. Hispanic lawmakers and experts this year had also pushed for the in ... More

Museum of London releases first recording of rediscovered music for Nelson   Sally Mann wins 9th Prix Pictet: World's top photography prize   Christie's auctions NFT and iMac computer used to create Wikipedia for $937,500

Emma Hamilton’s songbook © John Chase/Museum of London.

LONDON.- A recording of an old sea song, one of four recently rediscovered pieces of music paying tribute to Nelson, has been released today by the Museum of London. Brought to life by musicians from Guildhall School of Music & Drama, it marks the first performance of the piece in over 200 years. The extraordinary discovery was made last year by Museum of London librarian Lluis Tembleque Teres who discovered it amongst songbooks belonging to Nelson’s lover, the actress and model Emma Hamilton. It is thought the song was sung after the battle of Cape St Vincent (1797) and transcribed by Nelson after hearing it chanted by his crew. The lyrics have been known about since a letter from Nelson to William Douglas, 4th Duke of Queensberry, was sold at auction in 2013- the only other known reference to the song. The new discovery points to the addition of new music and a chorus by the Duke, a notorious ... More

Peter Klarnet, Senior Specialist, Christie’s said: We’re so honored to have had the opportunity to bring these two pieces to auction—we think that the result underscores the burgeoning interest in the history of the internet among collectors.” A portion of the sale proceeds will help support Wales’s alternative social media network pilot project WT.Social, an attempt to find a healthier and nontoxic alternative with existing social media platforms with a donation-only advertising-free model, as well as to help support a variety of charities working i ... Astrup Fearnley Museet presents the largest presentation of Sissel Tolaas' work to date   The Everson adds several new works to collection   Missoula Art Museum recognizes 15 years of the Frost Gallery

OSLO.- In the course of a single day, each of us breathes in and out around 24,000 times. With every breath, irresistible signals are sent straight to the brain – smells, which in a matter of nanoseconds trigger emotions and memories, stirring up the subconscious in turn. For Sissel Tolaas, smell is a vital yet often overlooked tool for communication. Over nearly three decades, she has devoted her research-based artistic practice to the olfactory, rather than the visual or the auditory, thereby appealing to a different type of sensory experience in her audience. The exhibition RE________exemplifies the breadth of Tolaas’ complex yet highly direct and intuitive artistic practice. All of the works on display are site-specific, developed or reworked especially for this exhibition. The museum’s architecture, its physical setting, and geographical context are all closely scrutinised, raising questions large and small in the process: What is change? What is hidden beneath the museum' ... More

Asif Hoque and Minyoung Kim join Taymour Grahne Projects' collaborative artist roster   The Fundação Bienal de São Paulo announces curator and artist to represent Brazil at La Biennale   UCLA's Pritzker Hall lauded for restoration, preserving modernist history

Born in Seoul, and now living and working in London, Kim works primarily on unstretched canvas, painting freely without the burden of conventional canvas frame to contend with.

LONDON.- Taymour Grahne Projects announced that Minyoung Kim has joined its collaborative artist roster. Born in Seoul, and now living and working in London, Kim works primarily on unstretched canvas, painting freely without the burden of conventional canvas frame to contend with. She is particularly influenced by myths, folktales, fairy tales and poetry. These narratives all spur uncanny and inventive imagery that speaks to an unconscious world. The ambiguity in Kim's paintings reference an emotive place where the balance between danger, mystery and the whimsical are explored. Minyoung Kim was born in Seoul in 1989, and lives and works in London. Graduating from The Slade School of Fine Art in 2021, Kim also holds an MFA in printmaking and a BA in Western Painting from Sungshin Women’s University, ... More

Cassi Namoda's third solo-exhibition with François Ghebaly opens in Los Angeles
LOS ANGELES, CA.- François Ghebaly is presenting Cassi Namoda’s third solo-exhibition with the gallery titled Forgotten Limbs. The exhibition addresses questions that are central to Namoda’s practice, primarily the question of how to render war and colonization through visual metaphor, in a particularly Luso-African context. Forgotten Limbs speaks to the collective feeling of disembodiment and alienation experienced by Africans living in post-colonial nations generally, but it specifically locates itself in Mozambique, incorporating photographs, landscapes, music and vernacular from the nation’s culture. The paintings and works on tile use the exile of Gungunhana, the last dynastic emperor of Gaza (present day Mozambique), as a point of entry to thematically explore the aftermaths of war and the privation of resources in times of conflict. Forgotten Limbs is Namoda’s largest body ... More

Martos Gallery now represents the Estate of Bob Smith
NEW YORK, NY.- Martos Gallery now represents the Estate of Bob Smith (1944, Springfield, Massachusetts – 1990, Miami, Florida). American artist Bob Smith regularly exhibited in Europe, yet remained in relative obscurity during his lifetime. Though Smith maintained a relationship with figures from the American avant-garde including Gary Indiana, Alice Neel and Larry Rivers, he developed much of his oeuvre in self-imposed exile, spending his early career in Europe and the Middle East before settling in New York and Miami. As a result, Smith developed a singular, esoteric body of work that integrated in granular detail various regional crafts and imagery. Smith’s earliest works were hallucinatory works on paper. Imaginary spaces carved by perspectival lines and populated by the vaguely natural and distinctly surreal, these works were initiated during his time at the Museum School of ... More

Exhibition features rarely-seen sculptural canvases by Sonya Rapoport
SAN FRANCISCO, CA.- Casemore Kirkeby is presenting Sonya Rapoport: Fabric Paintings. The exhibition features rarely-seen sculptural canvases and bold painting on patterned fabric by the late Bay Area artist Sonya Rapoport (1923-2015). First shown in 1967, Rapoport’s ‘Fabric Paintings' represents a radical departure for the artist who had previously been recognized as an Abstract Expressionist painter. This exhibition reveals the origin of Rapoport’s systematic abstraction of the female form and her first experiments with painting on found materials. Rapoport’s paintings anticipate the Pattern and Decoration movement of the mid-1970s, which explored textiles and ornamentation. While shopping for quilting materials with her daughter, Rapoport encountered gaudy, commercially printed upholstery fabric, and challenged herself to create “ostensibly respectable ... More

'The Hand of God' review: A portrait of the cineaste as a young man
NEW YORK, NY.- What good are movies? According to one line of thinking cited in “The Hand of God,” they are useless except as a “distraction from reality,” something we need because “reality is lousy.” No argument here! I should note that those opinions are attributed to none other than Federico Fellini. It’s the mid-1980s, and he has come to Naples to cast his next film. We don’t see him on-screen, but his words reach the ears of Fabio Schisa (Filippo Scotti), the skinny, watchful teenager at the center of this coming-of-age story. It’s also the story of how a young filmmaker wrests his vocation from a reality that is by turns ridiculous, enchanted, bewildering and tragic. Lousy? Perhaps, but also for writer and director Paolo Sorrentino, a treasury of material to work with and through. Sorrentino — who in his previous features (“Il Divo,” “The Great Beauty”) and television series (“The ... More

Heritage Auctions winter wine event exceeds $2.2 million
DALLAS, TX.- Twelve bottles of 1989 Chateau Haut Brion that sold for $29,520, plus a single bottle of 1988 Jayer Cros Parantoux that realized $24,600, helped lead Heritage Auctions’ Dec. 10 Wine Signature® event past $2.2 million. Both lots exceeded their high estimates — the Jayer by more than double. In fact, the Jayer sold for more than double the existing highest price ever achieved in the United States or Asia. The rare bottle of 1988 Jayer Cros Parantoux, which was signed by Henri Jayer himself, shattered its pre-auction estimate of $8,500-$12,000. Jayer, who died in 2006, was a heralded French vintner who began producing wines in the 1950s. His wines quickly earned a strong reputation and remain among the most sought after at auction. “This was a tremendously important result, really highlighting the fact that the right wines with the right provenance are irreplaceable ...
