Born in Nassau, Bahamas in 1979, Tavares Strachan has garnered international recognition for his ambitious and conceptually rich artistic practice that seamlessly blends elements of art, science, and history. His work often involves extensive research and at times, remarkable feats, such as his expedition to the Arctic to retrieve a 4.5-ton block of ice and ship it back to his tropical birthplace. This act, like many of Strachan's projects, embodies his self-described "infinite protest against the status quo," challenging conventional perspectives and prompting viewers to reconsider established narratives.
Strachan's artistic inquiries span a diverse range of subjects, including aeronautics, astronomy, deep-sea exploration, and extreme climatology. Through his monumental allegories, he delves into the complexities of the past, present, and future, often highlighting the stories of individuals, places, and events that have been historically marginalized or overlooked. His ongoing project, the Encyclopedia of Invisibility, an ever-expanding compendium exceeding 3,000 pages, serves as a testament to his commitment to bringing these untold stories to light and questioning the very systems that shape our understanding of knowledge and power.
The "SUPERNOVAS" exhibition at Kunsthalle Mannheim will explore Strachan's fascination with light and darkness, drawing parallels between the writing of history and astrophysical phenomena. The concept of the supernova, the brilliant explosion of a star, serves as a central metaphor for the exhibition. Strachan masterfully interweaves image, language, sculpture, music, universal knowledge, and collective memory within the gallery spaces, creating immersive and visually stunning installations that invite contemplation and dialogue.
Curated by Luisa Heese, "SUPERNOVAS" marks a significant milestone in Strachan's career, being his first major overview in continental Europe. His work has previously been showcased in numerous prestigious exhibitions, including a 2024 show at the Hayward Gallery in London, the 2019 Venice Biennale, and the 2018 Carnegie International. Strachan holds a BFA from the Rhode Island School of Design (2003) and an MFA in Sculpture from Yale University (2006). Demonstrating a deep connection to his roots, he divides his time between his studio in New York City and Nassau, where he operates B.A.S.E.C. (Bahamas Aerospace and Sea Exploration Center), an art studio and scientific research platform.
The "SUPERNOVAS" exhibition at Kunsthalle Mannheim promises to be a captivating and insightful experience, offering a comprehensive look at Tavares Strachan's innovative artistic practice and his profound engagement with the complexities of our world. The press conference for the exhibition will be held on Wednesday, April 9th, 2025, at 11 am, followed by the official opening on Thursday, April 10th, 2025, at 7 pm.
