DESSAU-ROßLAU.- The Bauhaus Dessau Foundation opened a new exhibition: Bauhaus Ecologies at the Bauhaus Museum Dessau. The exhibition sheds light on how science, art, technology, and design were combined with reflections on ecology at the historical Bauhaus and what impetus this can offer for current debates on sustainability and climate justice. For the exhibition opening, there will be introductions, conversations, a film, and a tour of the exhibition.

The Bauhaus is usually associated with the destructive consequences of modernity. Avant-garde artists of the 1920s were, however, already addressing the future of nature, environment, climate, and landscape. Ideas at the Bauhaus were influenced by such currents as biocentrism, natural philosophy, and organic design. Using objects from the collection of the Bauhaus Dessau Foundation, Bauhaus Ecologies tells stories of interdisciplinary encounters between crystallography and experimental film, biology and climate-just building or life sciences and abstract art.
Against the background of current debates on sustainability and climate justice, this project takes a new critical look at the history of modern design. One special highlight is the installation Bacterial Cellulose: Co-Weaving Biofilms, developed in the Cluster of Excellence Matters of Activity of the Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin. It shows the results of current research at the intersection of design, materials science, and biology.
A comprehensive programme in collaboration with local institutions and initiatives offers conversations, presentations, and excursions that provide spaces for public debates on historical and current ecological issues. Additional information about the free offerings as part of the exhibition Bauhaus Ecologies can be found at bauhaus-dessau.de.
The exhibition Bauhaus Ecologies is on view from 11 April 2 November 2025 at the Bauhaus Museum Dessau.
