As the publisher of this landmark nine-volume work, we have been proud to support its development over many years. Bringing this momentous work of scholarship to the A&AePortal introduces transformative research capabilities, from advanced search functionality to high- resolution image viewing and cross-referencing tools – enhancements that were unimaginable when the first volume was published in 1998. Researchers can now engage with Sargent’s extensive oeuvre in new ways, encouraging fresh insights and perspectives.

The Sargent catalogue raisonné has long been a cornerstone of scholarship on the artist, and this digital edition will ensure that it remains accessible and relevant for generations of researchers to come. We are pleased to have collaborated with Yale University Press on this project and look forward to seeing how this edition encourages fresh perspectives and deeper engagement with Sargent’s work.

John Singer Sargent (1856–1925) was an American painter and draughtsman who spent a significant amount of his career in England. Sargent trained in Paris in the studio of Carolus-Duran in the 1880s. Well-travelled, he took inspiration from several influences including, Velázquez, the Barbizon school and the Impressionists. These would influence his acclaimed technical ability, bravura brushstroke and sensitivity to light. In 1884 his painting Madame X offended the French Salon, and he moved to London where he became one of the most fashionable painters of the Edwardian period.
