John Singer Sargent (18561925) was an American painter and draughtsman who spent a significant amount of his career in England. Sargent trained in Paris in the studio of Carolus-Duran in the 1880s. Well-travelled, he took inspiration from several influences including, Velázquez, the Barbizon school and the Impressionists. These would influence his acclaimed technical ability, bravura brushstroke and sensitivity to light. In 1884 his painting Madame X offended the French Salon, and he moved to London where he became one of the most fashionable painters of the Edwardian period.
