Photographer Catherine Leroy, 60, Dies |

SANTA MONICA, CA.- French-born photojournalist Catherine Leroy, 60, died of cancer at St. John's Health Center in Santa Monica, California. At the age of 21, in 1966, she went to Saigon to take images of the U.S. troops in Vietnam. She was by the North Vietnamese Army in 1968 during the Tet Offensive but talked her way out and Life magazine published her image in the cover.
One of her most famous images is titled Corpsman In Anguish, from 1967 and portrays a young marine hunched over the dead body of his friend. Catherine Leroy worked for Sipa and Gamma photo agencies and later sold her works to United Press International and The Associated Press. She also covered the conflicts in Somalia, Afghanistan, Iraq, Iran and Libya.
