Goldin announces first ever pop culture Type 1 photo collection
1981 Madonna Debut Live Performance Type 1 Original Photo by George DuBose.

RUNNEMEDE, NJ.- As interest and demand for Type 1 photos continue to soar, Goldin announces its first-ever collection of pop culture Type 1 photos featuring some of the most historic moments in entertainment, music, art and politics. This inaugural collection is one of the largest collections of non-sport Type 1 photos ever curated at a major auction house. Iconic images of all-time legends such as Tupac, Bob Marley, Madonna, Marilyn Monroe, Queen Elizabeth, Frank Sinatra and more will be available for bidding through Goldin’s January Elite Pop Culture Auction.

The auction marks a new frontier in Type 1 pop culture photos. Until now, sports photographs have long dominated the Type 1 photography scene, with some baseball photos selling for over $1 million. This surge in popularity and value of original photography can be traced back to PSA’s adoption of the Photo Type Classification System© nearly 20 years ago.

"Pop culture Type 1 photos are no longer as overlooked or undervalued as they've been in the past," said Khyber Oser, Director of Vintage Memorabilia and Photography at Goldin. "We hope this extraordinary collection helps bring them out of the sports shadow and into the light."

The collection includes the following monumental images, among others:

• A 1994 Tupac Shakur Type 1 Original Photo featuring a solo shot of the hip-hop icon mid-show, likely performing with his group Thug Life around the time of the release of their 1994 single “Pour Out a Little Liquor.” It is one of very few authentic Type 1’s of Shakur by a professional photographer and it will be sought-after by Tupac fans looking to bolster their collections with an undocumented concert photo from the artist’s prime.

• The Birth of the Queen of Pop is depicted in an October 19, 1981 Type 1 Original Photo of Madonna’s debut live performance by photographer George Dubose. This dramatic image of the 23-year-old pop star from before her meteoric rise to fame offers the chance for collectors to own a truly unique piece of Madonna’s history.

• The 1956 meeting of Marilyn Monroe and Queen Elizabeth is captured in this celebrated Type 1 Original Photo, which was used for the cover of the 2022 book When Marilyn Met the Queen. Depicting an indisputably iconic moment in pop culture history, this Type 1 is an unparalleled addition to any photo collection.

• A Kurt Cobain Type 1 Original Photo from July 13, 1989, just one month after the release of Nirvana’s debut album Bleach. The stunning image of Cobain playing the guitar on the floor of Maxwell’s in Hoboken was captured by famed Nirvana photographer Ian Tilton, who was reportedly one of the last to see Cobain before his death.

• A Type 1 Original Photo of President John F. Kennedy and Jacqueline Bouvier Kennedy cutting the cake after their wedding ceremony in 1953, photographed by Frank Ataman, a small local photographer.

The photos are currently up for auction as part of Goldin’s January Pop Culture Elite Auction and will be available for bidding through February 17.
