LUXEMBOURG.- The 9th edition of
Luxembourg Art Week will take place from 10 to 12 November 2023 (Preview 9 November 2023) in the centre of Luxembourg City.
One year from its anniversary edition, Luxembourg Art Week is launching a series of strategic readjustments under the leadership of its new director, Caroline von Reden. Luxembourg Art Week was born out of the desire to build bridges between the local art scene and the international art market. From the outset, it was conceived by its founder, gallerist Alex Reding, as an event that unfolds as two complementary parts: a fair that is custom-tailored to meet the needs and expectations of its local and international exhibitors, and a vast programme of events organised in collaboration with national and international institutions and artists, which has allowed it to establish itself as the go-to event in the region.
While reinforcing its status as a local and regional driving force by multiplying and diversifying its partnerships, the fairs medium- and long-term development strategy aims to strengthen and promote Luxembourgs appeal as a choice destination for collectors and art lovers eager to make new discoveries. By highlighting the countrys formidable assets, Luxembourg Art Week is responding to the expectations of an increasingly demanding audience, who regard destination as a key factor in their decision-making, as evidenced by the recent reshuffles in the global network of galleries and fairs.
Thanks to its geographical location, Luxembourg Art Week benefits from a multicultural, cosmopolitan and multilingual environment (nearly 53% of Luxembourgs residents are foreign), at the crossroads of diverse influences and cultures. Situated in the heart of the European mainland, the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg and its capital are an integral part of the Benelux and the Greater Region, which includes the two German Länder of Rhineland-Palatinate and Saarland, the Walloon region and the German-speaking community of Belgium, as well as Lorraine in France, now part of the Grand Est region. This proximity to Paris, Brussels, Cologne and Düsseldorf, and the fact that it is at less than an hour and a halfs flight from Vienna, Geneva, Amsterdam, London and Milan, means that the fair reaches not only local and regional collectors, art market professionals and businesses, but also a vast pool of foreign collectors and connoisseurs, as well as a transnational network of professionals and institutions.
The move of the fair in 2021 into a 5,000 sqm temporary construction echoing the extension of the Grand Palais Éphémère or Frieze marked a decisive turning point. Located in the heart of Luxembourg City, just a few minutes from the major cultural and European institutions in the Kirchberg financial district, this distinctive venue has allowed it to attract 80 exhibitors and 20,000 paying visitors during its last edition (+30% compared to 2021). The bespoke facilities are characterised by a warm, friendly atmosphere conducive to personal encounters and discussions, while providing a professional and business-friendly environment.
For its 9th edition, Luxembourg Art Week has commissioned T.ZED Architects (Dubai, Luxembourg) to design the fairs communal areas and furnishings. Following a contextual approach, the functional unity of the interior and exterior spaces developed by T.ZED is based on a variation of combinations implemented with an economy of means and materials, guaranteeing a unique visitor experience.
Another of Luxembourg Art Weeks key features is the diversity of exhibitors: internationally established galleries share the floor with artists collectives, artist-run spaces and regional art centres. The selection committee, which comprises collectors, gallery owners and art professionals with close ties to the local and international art scene, is keen to broaden the fairs geographical scope by encouraging applications by new exhibitors from Northern, Southern and Eastern Europe. At the same time, it is keen to maintain a strong local presence by continuing to offer a unique platform for actors from the regional art scene that facilitates their access to international networks and enables them to raise their public profile, in line with the objectives of Luxembourgs governmental agency, Kultur | lx Arts Council Luxembourg.
The members of the committee, who are appointed for three years, also closely monitor the quality of presentations across all sections. The selection process is currently underway and the final list of exhibitors will be announced shortly. So far, we have received 160 requests from 13 countries, 54% of which are from new applicants, which leads us to believe that visitors may expect a few surprises.
Furthermore, we are indebted to the Luxembourg Ministry of Culture for its continuing support of the Take Off section, a showcase for emerging galleries, artist-run spaces, institutions, organisations and artists collectives.
Caroline von Reden, Director:
Objectives and outlook
While Luxembourg Art Week seeks to remain true to its origins, it recognises the need to grow and extend its reach beyond the regional context. To drive its development and raise the countrys profile as a prime location for contemporary art, it has appointed Caroline von Reden as its new Director of Strategy from this year onwards.
Caroline von Reden lives and works as an arts management consultant in Germany and Belgium. An interim manager and project initiator for various players in the art market since 2007, she has built excellent relationships and networks in Europe and around the world, particularly in America, the Middle East and Asia.
In 2018, prompted by clients, friends and colleagues, she established herself as an independent art consultant. Much of her professional experience focuses on the creation, consultancy and development of platform-type projects, notably through her involvement as head of the VIP and Collectors programmes for the viennacontemporary art fair in 2012/2013, with other clients including the design fair Collectible and Messe Berlin. She was also involved in founding Münzsalon Berlin and Brody House (now BrodyLand) in Budapest and was the European connection for the art club Tofic House in São Paolo, Brazil.
Caroline grew up in a family of artists and entrepreneurs where hospitality, exchange and dialogue were key values. Immersed in literature, philosophy, religion and politics, she was brought up in an environment that encouraged her natural curiosity and enterprising nature. At the turn of the millennium, she began studying history and cultural management, while working for start-ups in Munich in her free time. This experience in horizontal management had a long-lasting impact on her understanding of work and the world at large, as it kindled her entrepreneurial spirit while allowing her to fully grasp the potential of cooperation.
As Director of Strategy, Caroline is keen to bring her experience to bear on the development of Luxembourg Art Week in line with the vision of its founder, Alex Reding. By strengthening the ties between all interested parties museums, art centres, galleries and artists, as well as economic and socio-cultural players she aims to increase the fairs international visibility while bolstering its role as a driving force for the local and regional art scene.
The whole team at Luxembourg Art Week is thrilled to have her on board and looks forward to working with her in the weeks and months to come!
