LONDON, ENGLAND.-Amnesty joins pop hero to make ordinary people's voices a work of art Heaven 17 founder Martyn Ware and Amnesty International are today asking members of the public to phone-in their thoughts on a special “Imagining Hotline” to become part of a work of art to be displayed alongside pieces from contemporary art stars at a London gallery.

Martyn, together with former Yazoo and Erasure star VINCE CLARKE (aka Illustrious Company) is using the responses to create a unique three-dimensional sound installation especially for Amnesty’s Imagine a World… exhibition.

Other featured artists include Tracey Emin, Alison Lapper, Marc Quinn, Grayson Perry, New York’s Guerrilla Girls and Stella Vine. The exhibition opens on Friday 25 November at Bargehouse and admission is free.

Martyn and Amnesty are asking people to call Freephone 020 7033 1599 and leave their response to the question: “What would a world without violence against women be like?”

Amnesty hopes that the exhibition will make people think about how violence against women impacts on their own lives. Research suggests that many people feel it is ‘not their problem’ and not an issue that they need to engage with.

Martyn Ware said: “I’ve got a daughter of my own and I hate having to worry about her safety. If this exhibition can make people stop and think, then it’s done its job. The more people that phone up the better and more varied the work will be – and of course if you’re part of it, it’s a great reason to come to the gallery and hear it!”

Amnesty International UK Director Kate Allen said: “We are delighted by the response from artists and members of the public who have been invited to participate in Imagine a World. We want people who’d never normally think about violence against women to imagine how it impacts on their everyday lives. Hopefully people who come along to the Bargehouse will not only experience some fabulous art, but will also stop and think about the issue.”

The exhibition takes place under the banner of Protect the Human, a new drive by Amnesty International UK to make it easier for ordinary people to get involved in human rights – with film screenings, parties and school assemblies happening across the country.

The organisation aims to get a million people standing up for human rights in the UK.

Kate Allen added: “It’s never been more important to stand up for human rights. Protect the Human is all about making human rights more accessible, and the Imagine a World… exhibition is a great way to engage the art-loving public with our message.”
