In What Kind of Insurance Should Food Delivery Driver Be Covered?

Food delivery insurance can be more expensive than the traditional personal auto policy. However, its benefits are unique and worth the price. Lawfully, any vehicle driven or parked on a public roadway must have some minimum insurance; otherwise, penalties like suspensions or tickets might ensue. Those doing business and making money through food delivery should have the right coverage to cushion them from uncertainties of sudden and massive bills.

The primary business insurance level is Class A(1) Business Use insurance. It is a cover generally used in office-based jobs to give them a chance to travel to meetings, including other ad-hoc and infrequent journeys. This cover is still not enough to use by a delivery driver despite being better for those businesses that need domestic and social car insurance. Additionally, class C(3) companies that use car insurance or commercial car insurance provide increased levels of insurance, forming the basis of the insurance policies for delivery drivers of fast food. This policy will allow you to utilize your vehicle, be it a van, car, or bike, entirely for work.

It would be best if you dug deep into how to correctly insure your car as a food delivery company to prevent spending a lot of money. Did you know you will be prosecuted if you are involved in an accident as you deliver food or are pulled over by police and lack the appropriate cover level? Therefore, you should find the right cover for your vehicle.

Other types of policies available for Food Delivery Drivers include:

Commercial Policies
A commercial policy refers to an option available for food delivery drivers. However, this type of policy is more expensive than personal policy coverage. This type of policy will help to cover you even if you are involved in an accident in the middle of delivering. The rates will depend on your driving record, vehicle, and demographics.

Personal Auto Policy
Most personal auto insurance policies do not cover any damage or accident occurring during business use. Despite that, such coverage will allow you to meet the state's required minimums. It is advisable to let your insurance company know how your vehicle is used to determine your coverage requirements. They will otherwise deny a claim and refuse to get your policy renewed.

The Type of Coverages that are based on services you drive for

You most likely have some basic coverage already, depending on the kind of company you work for in food delivery. Companies often bear liability insurance for their drivers to shield themselves from big lawsuits. Some of the most popular delivery services include:

AmazonFresh/ Amazon Flex/ Amazon Prime Now
Amazon provides coverage to its drivers with $1 million in liability insurance, $1 million in underinsured/uninsured motorists, and $50,000 for collision and comprehensive over coverage of your policy.

Caviar
Caviar covers drivers with up to $1 million per accident for medical expenses, $100,000 death benefit of an accident, and survivor's benefits worth $100,000, including a $500 weekly benefit to cover accidental disability.

DoorDash
After your insurance has already paid out, the doordash drivers boast of up to $1million in liability coverage.

UberEATS
Drivers who work for UberEATS are given $1 million in liability coverage, $25,000 for the property damage, and $100,000 per accident.

Postmates
Postmates provides a $1 million liability for their drivers, above their coverage.
Many insurance carriers cover food deliverers either as a side hustle or a primary income source. Some of the best companies offering commercial policies for delivery drivers are;

AAA
AAA covers those drivers who utilize their vehicles to deliver medicine or food.

Allstate
It gives unique coverage options for the drivers using their vehicles to deliver food or other products.

Farmers
Farmers provide a business-use designation for the personal vehicles used to deliver groceries, food, and pharmacy deliveries.

Liberty Mutual
Liberty Mutual has recently expanded its coverage to provide insurance for food delivery for drivers using their vehicles to deliver medicine or food.

Progressive
It encourages buyers to ask about their policies while expanding their delivery drivers' coverage.

Nationwide
Nationwide grants the policies for the delivery drivers using their vehicles while at work.

USAA
It has plans to expand its current coverage to provide affordable options for drivers using their vehicles for delivery.

GEICO
The comprehensive policy of GEICO covers their drivers with any reason for being on the road. This protection also extends to the jobs of gig delivery.

As you choose your delivery driver insurance, you need to ask yourself, 'is it worth it? Some people can find it worth getting driver's insurance while others might not. That depends on the specific needs, including the kind of coverage that your delivery company provides, which could vary among companies. For example, Amazon Flex and Uber Eat provide coverage during deliveries. If assuming you have auto insurance, it will not be necessary to buy a separate delivery driver insurance. However, if you are a food deliverer in a local Chinese restaurant, you may not have insurance. In that case, it will be advantageous if you already have delivery driver insurance.

Final Thought
Personal auto insurance coverage protects policyholders behind the wheel but not the incidents of drivers operating the vehicle for business purposes. Thus, you could also be endangering yourself, including your assets, primarily if you deal with on-demand platforms such as Uber Eats or Postmates.
