What Should You Ask Your Metal Roofer?

When looking for a metal roofer for your project, it helps to ensure you are hiring one that is competent and can deliver a good project completed to specification. But there is no way you will be able to tell you are working with the right metal roofing contractor without first asking them some relevant questions. Here are some of what you should ask your metal roofer before giving them that project to handle.

Are you licensed?
This is arguably the most important question you want to ask a metal roofer before awarding them your project. It is required in many states that roofing contractors carry certain licenses to be able to work. Find out if the metal roofer belongs to any trade organizations and is compliant with relevant regulations in your locality. This will help you avoid dealing with a fake contractor out to fleece you.

Do you have a fixed place of business?
It is also relevant to find out whether your metal roofer has a permanent business address before giving out jobs. This is necessary for you to know where you can head to when their attention is needed. A roofing contractor without a fixed address is more likely to do a shoddy job because it is rather easy for them to disappear without trace.

Since when have you been in business?
This question is relevant to help you estimate the suitability of a metal roofer for your business. A contractor that has been in business for long is likely to be more adept and so be able to do a good job.

What is the total cost of project?
You should endeavor to have a metal roofer provide a written estimate of what a project will cost you. This will help you guard against issues revolving around costs later on in the project.

Are you bonded and insured?
Accidents could happen while a project is being executed. And when these manage to occur, it could spell extra but avoidable expenses for you. You should therefore ensure that your metal roofer, at the minimum, carries general liability insurance and workers’ compensation insurance. It also pays to be sure that your chosen contractor is bonded to guard against the possibility of them leaving your project uncompleted when due.

Are you using subcontractors?
Metal roofers sometimes subcontract projects, especially when they have others they are working on themselves. You will therefore need to confirm upfront if your project will be given to a subcontractor to do. If the answer you get is yes, you should ask to know how the subcontractors will be supervised.

Can I have your references?
It is an advisable thing to find out what it was like for previous clients working with your metal roofer. You should suggest that your contractor provide former or current clients that you could speak with. Chances are that you will be provided with details of only satisfied clients. So you may need to search around for reviews as well.

May I know about your workmanship warranty?
You should ask your metal roofer for details of their workmanship warranty. It is important to be aware that manufacturer’s warranty is different from workmanship warranty. The former covers your metal roofing while the latter relates to workmanship. You should ask for at least a two-year workmanship warranty.
