Judith Leiber
A selection of over 50 colorful and whimsical Judith Leiber handbags will also be offered. This offering includes a Judith Leiber Poodle minaudière (lot 242; estimate: $3,000 - $4,000); a Hollywood minaudière (lot 214; estimate: $2,000-3,000); and an owl head minaudière (lot 240; estimate: $2,000-3,000). A limited edition Neiman Marcus minaudiere (lot 244; estimate: $1,000 - $3,000) is another whimsical lot for anyone who likes to shop til they drop. It is one of five limited edition Neiman Marcus Express minaudières and is indicated with the #3 on the side. Crystals on the bottom depict a track upon which the express trolley rolls.
Sea Silk
Garments made of sea silk, a rare and coveted material, will also be offered. Sea silk, also known as byssus, is a natural material with a distinctive glow, reminiscent of gold threads. The history of sea silk is complex, and the material has emerged as a critical part of the climate change dialogue as it is made of a Pinna Nobilis, a mollusk found only in the Mediterranean Sea, that has been named an endangered species. Sea silk is so rare that, according to sea-silk scholars, only a small number of examples exist in museums and private collections, presenting buyers with a singular opportunity to acquire this highly sought after and elusive material. The sale will offer a hat, shawl and pair of gloves made from knitted sea silk (lots 3-5; estimate for hat and gloves: $4,000-6,000; estimate for shawl: $6,000-8,000). The items are family heirlooms, which the owners date to around 1920, with a story that traces the items to southern Italy, one of the most important historic sources of sea silk.
Louis Vuitton Luggage & Bags
The sale will conclude with a selection of Louis Vuitton trunks, suitcases and bags dating back to the turn of the 20th Century. The selection is highlighted by an impressive Louis Vuitton mens suit trunk from the mid-20th Century (lot 299; estimate: $6,000 - $8,000). Another noteworthy lot is a steamer trunk from the early 20th Century (lot 300; estimate: $2,000 - $4,000). This trunk is an early part of Louis Vuitton history as it features woven jacquard canvas, an early form of the Monogram canvas that was developed by Georges Vuitton in 1896.
