Pottery from important New England estate, American Indian art lead Ethnographic Art Auction
A Sioux Beaded Wool Tablecloth (estimate: $6,000-8,000) is featured in the sale.

DALLAS, TX.- An extraordinary array of some 200 lots of pottery from a prominent Chestnut Hill, Massachusetts estate and an extensive selection of American Indian art will be among the highlights in Heritage Auctions’ Ethnographic Art: American Indian, Pre-Columbian and Tribal Art Signature® Auction Dec. 2.

“The pottery in this sale is from an important collection, a New England couple who spent years acquiring some extraordinary pieces,” Heritage Auctions’ American Indian Art Specialist Delia Sullivan said. “This exceptional collection includes pieces by many top potters, including Margaret Tafoya, Tony Da, Dextra Quotskuyva Nampeyo, Virgil Ortiz, and many more. Demand for pottery like this is soaring, and this auction includes plenty of options for collectors at all levels.”

One of the top lots in this auction is a Sioux Beaded Hide Capelet (estimate: $8,000-12,000). It is a stunning piece of beadwork, meticulously stitched with tiny glass beads and edged with quill-wrapped fringe. This item was consigned by the family of the woman who made it, Julia Jordan, a full-blood Oglala Sioux born into Chief Red Cloud’s band. Another of Jordan’s creations, a Sioux Beaded Wool Tablecloth (estimate: $6,000-8,000) is featured in the sale. It is nearly identical to one in the Smithsonian Institution, leading us to believe that both were made by the same hand.

A Rare Crow Beaded Cloth Cradleboard (estimate: $35,000-55,000) is one of the top Plains item in the sale. These command high prices due to their rarity.

Among the Southwest material is a very large (111 by 80 inches) Navajo Sandpainting Rug (estimate: $8,000-12,000). It captures imagery used by Navajo medicine men for healing.

Top pottery lots in the sale include, but are not limited to:

· A San Ildefonso Redware Bear by Tony Da (estimate: $15,000-25,000)

· A San Ildefonso Polychrome Jar Attributed to Martina Vigil and Florentine Montoya (estimate: $12,000-18,000)

· A Mimbres Figural Black-On-White Bowl (estimate: $8,000-12,000)

· A San Ildefonso Redware Jar (estimate: $8,000-12,000)

· A Santa Clara Blackware Pot by Lu Ann Tafoya (estimate: $3,000-5,000)

· A Santa Clara Carved Redware Jar by Margaret Tafoya c. 1950 (estimate: $2,000-3,000)

· An Acoma Polychrome Jar by Barbara and Joseph Cerno (estimate: $2,500-3,500)

· A Hopi Polychrome Jar, c. 1920 (estimate: $2,000-3,000)

The auction includes an array of nearly three dozen lots of American Indian baskets, including Apache, Pomo and Navajo examples. Among the highlights:
· A Large Apache Polychrome Pictorial Storage Jar (estimate: $35,000-45,000)
· A Yokuts Polychrome Lidded Jar by Mary Sampson (estimate: $10,000-15,000)

Other auction highlights include, but are not limited to:
· A Cheyenne Ledger Drawing Attributed to Howling Wolf (estimate: $8,000-12,000)
