LONDON.- The Live Auction, the first of two sales of The Roger Federer Collection - Sold to Benefit The RF Foundation, raised £1,329,375 and will support the valuable work carried out by The Roger Federer Foundation, whose mission is to empower vulnerable children with the provision of early education in both Switzerland and Africa. Further to these 20 lots, fans and sports memorabilia collectors across the world have until 13/14 July to place bids on the remaining 300 lots in The Online Auction, spanning the full career to date of Roger Federer.
The Live Auction on 23 June welcomed enthusiastic bidders and buyers from across all continents, with 61% of new registrants to Christies from around the world. 84% of lots exceeded their high estimate. The sale quadrupled its low overall estimate.
The auction, taken by Christies Global President, Jussi Pylkkänen, was led by intensely competitive bidding for lot 13, (illustrated on p1), Roger Federers Champion Outfit and Racket, French Open, 2009 (estimate £50,000-70,000) realised £150,000. Lot 10, Roger Federers Champion Outfit and Racket, The Championships, Wimbledon 2007 also realised £150,000.
Each lot in The Live Auction represented a Grand Slam title from Rogers record breaking career and an iconic moment from either the Australian Open, the French Open, The Championships at Wimbledon or the U.S. Open.
Roger Federer comments, I can hardly believe that the first 20 lots raised £1,329,375,000. I want to thank all those who bid for my sporting memorabilia and wish the buyers much joy with them. I feel very humbled by this first result today knowing the proceeds will allow additional projects that can be undertaken by The Roger Federer Foundation.
Roger continues, I now look forward to seeing the results from The Online Auction of my sporting memorabilia, which remains open for bidding until 13/14 July, and to playing in The Championships at Wimbledon.
